BALTIMORE, Md. (April 20, 2023) — The Morgan State men's tennis team hit the gas and put visiting Howard out of commission in taking the doubles point and tacking up four singles wins to notch a 5-2 victory over the Bison on Senior Day at MSU Tennis Courts. The conference win improves Morgan's overall record to 6-11-1 and the Bears are now 3-1 in the MEAC with one regular-season match remaining.
Morgan took control of things early with a solid push through doubles. At the top spot, Morgan's #12 Niles Rachal and Rhajzon Rankins whipped up a 6-0 win over the Bisons' Dunac/Dieng on court two. Shortly after, Mikeal Carpenter and Bertin Karenzi collected a 6-0 win on court three over Knowles/Westbrook to pin that 1-0 lead on the board for the Bears, suspending action on court one with Sebastian Lopez and Makkijha Brown battling court on court one.
In singles, the Bears claimed the opening set on court one when Carpenter recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win against Justin Nadeau. Marcel Dawson got the Bison on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory on court two against Brown. The Bears would go on to claim wins courts three, four and five. Rankins stacked up a tense 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 win over Hassimiyou Dieng on court four to make it 3-1 Bears. At the No. 5 spot, senior Sebastian Lopez hammered out a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Gabe Knowles to clinch the match fr the Bears.
Howard's Pierce Westbrook dispatched Karenzi 6-4, 6-4 on court six, while Rankins and Rachal closed out the match with wins on court four and court three, respectively.
