BALTIMORE, Md. (March 5, 2023)—A day after beginning its home campaign and the annual MSU Tournament with a pair of losses to Fairleigh Dickinson, Morgan State turned it around and concluded the tournament with a pair of victories on Sunday at Lois T. Murray Field.
The third time proved to be the charm, as the Lady Bears began the day defeating Fairleigh Dickinson in their third meeting of the weekend, 2-0. Morgan State then defeated Bryant, 5-3 in the finale.
The Lady Bears improved to 6-8 on the season. Fairleigh Dickinson, who earlier in the day dropped a 5-1 decision to Bryant, fell to 6-8 on the season. Bryant, who on Saturday competed nearby in the DeMarini Tiger Clash at Towson, fell to 3-6.
Next Up: Morgan State will head over to the University of Maryland Baltimore County for the UMBC Tournament held Friday, March 10-Sunday, March 12. The Lady Bears will face Cornell and host UMBC on Friday, and will take on Merrimack and UMBC on Saturday. MSU will conclude the tournament with a single game on Sunday against Cornell.
How It Happened: Game 1 vs. Fairleigh Dickinson
Much like Saturday's opener against the Knights, Morgan State would jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Only this time the Lady Bears would hold on.
Morgan State struck in the third inning when
Alison Keener singled to right field with bases loaded to score
Madison Bolyea.
Victoria Fletcher would ground out to short with bases loaded to score
Maia Wilkins for the second run.
Fletcher received the win and improved to 2-0 on the season. She pitched a complete game shutout, scattering four hits with no runs or walks and threw a game-high seven strikeouts.
How It Happened: Game 2 vs. Bryant
Anaya Hunte tripled to right center in the second inning to score
Madison Nunez and
Melissa Paz singled through the right side to score Hunte, as Morgan State had another 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs responded with three runs of their own in the top of the third to claim the lead at 3-2. Hudson doubled to right field, scoring Smith and Co Paolanto. Hudson would score when Marcel reached on a Morgan State error to put the guest ahead 3-2.
Bryant's lead was shortlived, as Fletcher singled up the middle in the bottom of the third inning to score
Asia Thomas and even the score at 3-3.
MSU would add two more runs in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt by
Alison Keener to score Hunte and Thomas grounded out which allowed
Ky'Anah Lake to score the fifth and final run.
Hunte led the tea with score high school nine innings, while also throwing a game-high nine strikeouts. She finished the game going 2-for-3 with two runs.
