Shepherd, Henson Named To BOXTOROW All-American Team

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 31, 2023)--Graduate forward Charlene Shepherd was named BOXTOROW All-American Team for Division I women's college basketball. Shepherd earned First-Team All-America honors, while Henson was a Second-Team All-America selection.
 
A native of Killeen, Texas, Shepherd was a two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Player of the Week and a three-time MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honoree. She was an All-MEAC First Team selection and also garnered All-MEAC Defensive Team accolades. 
 
Shepherd started 27 of the 29 games played and finished the season averaging a team-leading 15.2 points and finished second on the team in rebounding at 6.9 boards per game. Shepherd led the Lady Bears in scoring, assists (68), steals (62), blocks (13) and knocked down a team-best 114-of-154 free throws.
 
She ranked second in the MEAC in scoring, third in steals, fifth in rebounding, seventh in field goal percentage (39.2), fifth in free throw percentage, ninth in assists and 18th in blocked shots. She reached double figures in scoring 24 times, rebounds six times and had five double-doubles. Shepherd tallied a career-high 27 points at Coppin State (1/14) and grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds at Norfolk State (1/23).
 
Shepherd, who spent the last two seasons at Morgan State after transferring from North Texas, finished her collegiate career recording a combined 1,086 points and 606 rebounds.

Ja'Niah 

A native of Baltimore, Md., Henson was a two-time MEAC Co-Player of the Week and a one-time MEAC Player of the Week selection, who earned All-MEAC First Team honors at the end of the regular season.
 
Henson started 27 of the 28 games she played and finished second on the team in scoring (14.0), steals (53) and assists (62). She knocked down a team-leading 50 three-pointers and shot a team-best 86.0 percent (74-of-86) from the free throw line.
 
She reached double figures in scoring 22 times, including a career-high 28 points in a win at Towson (11/30). Henson led the MEAC in free throw percentage and was fourth in the league in scoring, fourth in steals, ninth in field goal percentage, fifth in 3-pt field goal percentage, fifth in 3-pt field goals per game and 10th in assists. Henson also finished the season ranked 38th in the nation in free throw percentage.
 
Henson concluded her career at Morgan State having totaled 930 points, 180 rebounds, 189 assists and 127 steals, which ranks 16th on the all-time charts at Morgan State.
 
The Lady Bears completed the 2022-23 season 17-12, 10-4 in the MEAC, which was good for second place and the No. 2 seed in the MEAC Tournament. Morgan State advanced to the Postseason Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), where it faced host Wake Forest in the opening round. It was the program's second all-time postseason appearance on the Division I level and the first since the 2010-11 campaign, when that team also reached the Postseason WNIT.
 
Morgan State which had a program-best 16-game home winning streak, went 11-2 at home this season to set the school record for most home victories in a season.
