Bears Suffer Loss To South Carolina State To End Road Trip

The short story:  Justin Wilson had 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks and South Carolina State scored 48 points in the paint in a 74-62 upset win over Morgan State on Monday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

OPENING TIP
  • Wilson, a transfer from Northern Oklahoma C.C., collected his first double-double of the season as he led the Bulldogs with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting while also pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds (9 defensive) ... he also posted a season-high five blocked shots.
  • Lesown Hallums and Rahsaan Edwards finished with 12 points apiece, while Rakeim Gary added 10 points and three assists.
  • Senior guard Isaiah Burke scored a game-high 21 points (7-14 FG) and hit 2-for-6 from beyond the arc. Junior guard Kamron Hobbs finished 9 points, five assists and two steals.  
  • Daquan Copeland scored 9 points and led the Bears on the glass with nine rebounds ... he also had four steals.
     
THE DIFFERENCE
  • After the halftime break, MSU used an 11-1 run to cut the Bulldogs to 40-34 lead with 15:56 remaining.
  • Rahsaan Edwards hit a 3-pointer to end SCSU's scoring drought and Latavian Lawrence hit a corner jumper to put the Bulldogs up 49-40. 
  • Rakeim Gary hit a jumper to put the Bulldogs back up by double-figures, but Kamron Hobbs responded with a 3-pointer and Daquan Copeland hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 51-45 at the 9:11 mark.
  • The Bears maintained the momentum when Burke converted a 3-point play to trim the lead to 55-50 with 7 :11 remaining.
  • SCSU's got back to back buckets when Rakeim Gary collected a steal in the middle of the floor and turned it into a fastbreak layup, followed by a layup by Davion Everett to push the lead to 59-50. 
  • Wilson stripped Burke near the 3-point line and kicked it out to Jordan Simpson for a facebreak dunk to go up by double-digits, 69-59.
  • SCSU shot 52-percent from the field and 30-percent from behind the arc while the Bears shot 33-percent from the field and connected on 3-of-13 (.231) 3-pointers.
  • Morgan shot .773 (17-22) from the free throw line, compared to the Bulldogs' .500 percent (10-20).
  • SCSU outrebounded the Bears by a 45-32 margin and outscored the Bears in the paint 48 to 26.
  • The teams combined for 50 turnovers - Morgan had 21 turnovers while SCSU finished with 29.
  • Morgan tied the game before the Dogs hit a pair of 3-pointers - a banked in 3-pointer off a facebreak and a 3-pointer by Edwards to go up 12-6 (12:42).
  • Collin Nnamene scored on a dunk and Hobbs scored on a fastbreak to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 19-12 (9:44). SCSU answered by outscoring the Bears 13-4 over the next five minutes ... A transition 3-pointer by Gary, followed by a basket by Raquan Brown extended the Bulldogs lead to 32-16 (5:01).
  • The Bears went into the halftime trailing 39-24
     
NOTABLE
  • SCSU leads the all-time series against Morgan, 45-41.
  • Monday night's game dropped Morgan's road record to 2-11 this season.
  • The Bears are on a 2-game losing skid, while SCSU won its second consecutive game.
  • Isaiah Burke collected his 13th game of scoring 20 or more points this season.
