Second-Half Surge Too Much for Men’s Basketball

The short story:  A second-half surge by Longwood on Sunday proved to be too much for the Morgan State men's basketball team as it fell 88-54. The Bears drop to 2-8 on the season, while the Lancers advance to 8-1.

OPENING TIP

  • Elijah Tucker, a redshirt sophomore from Canton, Ga., led the Lancers with a double-double off the bench. He finished with a 17 points 6-of-11 shooting and added a game-high 11 rebounds.
  • Senior guard Walyn Napper scored 13 points (6-11 FG) and grabbed five boards with seven assists, and four steals in 31 minutes. Senior forward Jesper Granlund, and graduate student Michael Christmas added 12 points apiece.
  • Redshirt-senior guard Wynston Tabbs scored eight of his 12 points (5-16 FG) in the first half. He also added four assists and a steal in 27 minutes. 
  • Redshirt-junior Kamron Hobbs knocked down 3-of-5 3-pointers and had 11 points, while redshirt-junior Will Thomas added 11 points (5-8 FG).
  • Junior 7-footer Christian Oliver led the Bears on the glass with six boards and chipped in nine points.
     
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Longwood connected on 51.6 percent (32-62) of their shots from the field and 30.8 percent from behind the arc while the Bears shot 43.4 percent from the field and connected on 4 of 14 (.286) 3-pointers.
  • Morgan shot .333 (4-12) from the free throw line, compared to Longwoods' .690 percent (20-29).
  • The Lancers outscored the Bears in the paint by a 48-28 margin, including a 24-8 edge in the second half.
  • Longwood outrebounded the Bears by a commanding 45-25 margin, including a 16-5 advantage on the offensive boards.
  • Longwood's bench outscored the Bears by a 37-16 margin.
  • Longwood outscored Morgan 71-23 in that stretch to turn a 14-point deficit into an 88-54 win.
  • The 48-point swing extended Longwood's best start at the Division I level.
  • Morgan was held to 10-of-36 shooting from the floor over the final 27:30 of the game.
  • Down 31-17 with eight minutes to play in the first half, Tucker jumpstarted a 9-0 run that put Longwood back in the game.
  • The Lancer defense held a Morgan State side that started 13-17 from the floor to 3-11 shooting over the final eight minutes of the half. Tucker had seven points during those eight minutes as Longwood cut the Morgan lead to 38-37 at the break.
  • In the second half, the defense was again sensational. Longwood gave up five points in the first 10 minutes. Granlund drained back-to-back threes to start the game deciding run. He nailed one off a Napper feed with 15:39 to go to give Longwood the lead for good at 45-43.
  • Morgan was held scoreless for the next six minutes during a 22-0 Longwood run that saw the lead balloon to 64-43 with 9:07 to play. Longwood never let up and extended the lead to 34 before the final horn.

  • The win improves Longwood's series record against Morgan to 2-1.
  • Morgan's record is currently 0-7 when being outrebounded.
