FAIRFAX, Va. (Nov. 18, 2023) — Freshmen Shawn Rynarz and Kingsley Menifee picked up victories for Morgan State wrestling on Saturday afternoon but in the end the Bears fell to host George Mason by a score of 36-6, followed by a 56-0 loss to No. 14 Minnesota.
Morgan dropped to 0-5 on the season with the pair of losses, while the Patriots improved to 4-2, and the Big Ten's Minnesota Gophers move to 3-0 overall.
Trailing 8-0, Rynarz (Arlington, Texas) got the Bears on the board with a 9-6 decision over Mason's Patrick Schellpfeffer at 133. Menifee (Warrenton, Va.) picked up a 9-4 decision over Malachi DuVall at 184, but in the end the Patriots came away with a 36-6 win.
In one of the more competitive matches, Jake Marsh was defeated by Evan Maag 10-5, at 165 pounds. Marsh was leading 3-2 to start the final period and was up 5-3 with :30 left before Maag registered a takedown and a near fall in the final :30 seconds of the match.
Minnesota had little trouble with Morgan as they won all nine contested matches by bonus points. Only one bout made it past the second period and no takedowns were recorded by the Bears. The shutout was the team's first since a 48-0 win over Maryland in Jan. of 2021, and it was the Gophers' largest win, and first time reaching 50 points, since a 53-0 victory over Duke in Jan. of 2019.
