Sacred Heart Holds Off Morgan State, 63-55

BALTIMORE, Md., (Nov 12,2023)--The Lady Bears fell short in its non-conference game against Sacred Heart on Sunday, falling by a score of 63-55 at Hill Field House. It was the first time the two programs have played each other since the 2000-01 season.

The Lady Bears (1-1) were led by Gabrielle Johnson, who scored a game-high 19 points and recorded six steals and three blocks. The game was a good one for Johnson atmosphere wise since she was playing against her old high school teammate, Ny'Ceara Pryor.

"I felt good playing against her, getting some good competition and having the whole city out," said Gabrielle Johnson. "I wish we had come away with the win, but other than that it was just nice playing against her again."

Joelle Johnson also had a big day for Morgan State, as she recorded her first double-double for the season and as a Lady Bear, finishing with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

"I'm really just helping my guards, get that confidence to step out there knowing I'm going to be there for their help, so they can pressure up on the perimeter. And when I'm out on the perimeter, getting out there quick enough to contest those three-point shooters," said Joelle Johnson.

Morgan State struggled this afternoon with knocking down three-pointers, as well as defending against the three-point shot. The guests shot 46.7 percent (7-of-15), while Morgan connected on just 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from beyond the arc.

"I'm disappointed that we didn't protect the perimeter better and as a result they shot 7-fo-15, which is their strength. We shot 4-for-19 and right now this is not our strength," said Morgan State head coach Ed Davis.

"The schedule's not going to get any easier. This particular team [Sacred Heart] played in the NCAA Tournament last year and we have to match that. If we're going to play the Stanford's and South Carolina's of this year we have to get an identity. Our identity either has to be aggressive and nasty or we're soft."

Sacred Heart was led by Sajada Bonner, who scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three-point range. Bonner also pulled down three rebounds, had a steal and an assist. Pryor finished with 13 points, a game-high eight assists, three rebounds and three steals, while Sierra Johnson tallied eight points, a team-high eight rebounds.

The Lady Bears are back on the court on Thursday, Nov 16, as they host Notre Dame of Maryland University as they celebrate Education Day. Tip-off is at 11 a.m. at Hill Field House.
