Morgan State Finishes 13th at the Northeast Classic

DEPTFORD, N.J. (Jan. 22, 2023)--The Morgan State Lady Bears went 1-2 in Sunday's matches and finished in 13th place at the Northeast Classic. There were 34 teams in the field and 22 of the top 25 teams were competing in this tournament.

Match 1
#24 Morgan State 2, Central Missouri 4
What is important to note is Morgan State beat their first opponent, Central Missouri, 4-3 in the Best 4-of-7 Baker. It wasn't until after the match the Central Missouri coach advised the head official of an infraction in Game #5 which cost the Bears to score a 0 for the 5th and 10th frames in Games 6 and 7. The score change altered the result of the match to Central Missouri 4-2. A formal protest was filed in writing with the NCAA Rules official, but the decision of the official was upheld.

Match 2
#24 Morgan State 2, #18 Mercyhurst 4
Morgan State showed strong scoring in the Games 1, 2 & 4 with Games of 223, 211 and 223, but the match was tied at 2 games apiece. It was in Games 4 and 5 that Morgan found themselves playing catch up in each game, but it wasn't enough to catch Mercyhurst which closed out the match 4-2. Cheyenne Washington led all striking from the anchor position, striking 10 times in the match. Both Aliya Adams and Johnna Hill struck five times during the match.

Match 3
#24 Morgan State 4, #25 Merrimack 0
This match was all Morgan State. The Bears rattled off games of 199-224-192-195 which was enough to end the match early against Merrimack. Washington again paced the Bears with seven strikes as anchor. Adams followed with six strikes in the match.

"On Saturday, she stayed confident and consistent along with communicating with her teammates to help them. It was a great showing and congratulate her on her deserved honors."

"We had a strong weekend, being right in a tight total pinfall mix in the top third of the leaderboard in the strongest field of the season," added Falbo on the weekend. "We have to stay to our work ethic and continue to focus on ways to improve upon this great showing for our Lady Bears."
