Morgan's Win Streak Ends with 88-56 loss at Howard

Senior guard Isaiah Burke scored a game-high 21 points with seven rebounds.

The short story: Senior guard Isaiah Burke scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the first half, but Morgan State's 6-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday as they swallowed an 88-56 conference loss to Howard before a raucous crowd at Burr Gymnasium. 

OPENING TIP
  • Burke connected on 7-of-17 from the floor, 3-of-6 from three and converted 4-of-7 from the free throw line for the Bears. 
  • Miller, who entered the game averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds, was helped off the floor at the 8 minute mark suffering an apparent leg injury. 
  • Daiquan Copeland finished with 10 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists off the bench in his season debut for the Bears. 
  • The Bison had four players score in double-figures. Jordan Wood led the way with 15 points and six rebounds, while Kobe Dickson finished with 13 points (5-7 FG) off the bench. Marcus Dockery and Steve Settle added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore point guard Elijah Hawkins added a game-high 13 assists to go along with seven points, five boards and three steals.
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Burke opened the game by scoring 10 of the Bears first 14 points.
  • Howard used an 11-2 run that included a 3-pointer by Hawkins and Settles finished off a fastbreak with a dunk to give the Bison a 30-14 lead.
  • Malik Miller is assisted off the floor having suffered an injury with 8:43 on the clock and the Bears trailing 25-18. 
  • Hawkins hit his third triple of the game to extend Howard's lead to double digits at 28-18.
  • The Bears closed the gap as they used a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 32-27 with 4 minutes remaining, but Howard entered the halftime with a 41-32 advantage.
  • Howard extended its lead to 52-36 and Settles scored on a breakaway dunk forcing a Bears timeout with 16:10 remaining. The Bison increased the lead to 17 behind a pair of free throws (58-41) with 13:08 remaining and Howard's lead never dropped below 19 throughout the remainder of the game.
  • Morgan shot .500 (8-16) from the free throw line, while the Bison finished 11-for-15 (.733) from the stripe.
  • The Bears were out-rebounded by the Bison by a 38-32 margin.
  • Morgan shot .373 (22-of-59) from the field, compared to Howard's .567 (34-of-60). The Bears shot .188 (3-16) from beyond the arc, while the Bison connected on 9-of-19 (.474) from 3-point range.
  • Howard held a 14-9 advantage in second chance scoring.
  • The Bison scored 39 points off forcing 22 Morgan turnovers.

NOTABLE
  • Saturday night's game dropped Morgan's road record to 2-8 this season.
  • The Bears' 6-game winning streak was it's longest win streak since 2013 in which they racked up eight consecutive wins.
  • Burke has scored 20 or more points in 10 games this season, including four games of scoring 30 points. 
  • Tonight marked the 113th meeting between the teams -- Morgan leads the series 65-48.

Morgan will face Norfolk State (13-6, 3-1), the defending MEAC champions, on Monday night at Hill Field House. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. (EST) and will be nationally televised by ESPNU.
