The short story: Senior guard Isaiah Burke scored 17 of his game-high 30 points in the first half, while Malik Miller added 16 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, as visiting Morgan State defeated crosstown rival Coppin State, 83-66 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown at the Physical Education Complex. 

OPENING TIP
  • Burke connected on 5-of-11 from the floor, 5-of-8 from three and converted 15-of-18 from the free throw line. 
  • Miller recorded his eighth double-double of the season as he finished with 16 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, to go along with five assists, three steals in 39 minutes.
  • Redshirt sophomore guard Will Thomas added 11 points with nine boards in 19 minutes off the bench.
  • Nendah Tarke and Mike Hood led the Eagles with 20 points each and Justin Steers had 11 points. Sam Sessoms, who entered the game ranked No. 4 at the NCAA Division I level in points at 22.4 per game, was limited to 9 points (4-12 FG) and added six assists, five steals and four rebounds.
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Morgan jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening moments tonight.
  • Miller and Burke combined for 16 points as the Bears built a commanding 19-3 lead with 14:01 remaining ... Coppin's first basket of the game came at the 12:22 mark when Sam Sessoms hit a jumper in the paint as the Eagle trailed 25-5.
  • Miller hit a 3-pointer at the 6:30 mark to give the Bears its largest lead of the half at 36-14. 
  • The Bears led 38-18 with 5:21 remaining before Mike Hood hit a 3-pointer to help ignite a 15-4 run by the Eagles. Hood connected on a fastbreak 3-pointer to cut the Bears lead to 42-33 with under 2 minutes remaining … Morgan went into the halftime with a 45-36 lead. 
  • Morgan shot .714 (25-35) from the free throw line, while the Eagles finished 26-for-38 (.684) from the stripe.
  • The Bears out-rebounded the Eagles by a 45-35 margin.
  • Morgan shot .429 (24-of-56) from the field, compared to CSU's .316 (18-of-57). The Bears shot .370 (10-27) from beyond the arc, while the Eagles connected on 4-of-21 (.190) from 3-point range.
  • MSU held a 14-6 advantage in second chance scoring.
  • The Eagles scored 16 points off forcing 22 Morgan turnovers.
NOTABLE
  • Saturday night's game improved Morgan's road record to 2-7 this season.
  • The Bears are on a 5-game winning streak.
  • Burke notched his second straight game of scoring 30 points and is averaging 29.3 points against MEAC competition ... He has scored 20 or more points in eight games this season, including three games of scoring 30 points. 
  • Morgan has won 7 of the last 11 regular season contests over the rival Eagles since 2019-20. 
  • As a result of his three steals tonight, Miller ranks No. 2 among Morgan's all-time leaders in steals with 176 career steals. Terrence Wright is the school's all-time leader with 186 steals in 76 games (1992-96).

QUOTABLE
  • "We never fell when they made their runs, and that's the mark of a good team," Morgan State coach Kevin Broadus said. "Our defense was pretty good in holding them to 19 percent [4-of-21] from 3[-point range] and 30-something from the field. I thought our defense today was really good, and we've just got to keep building off of that."
