NORFOLK, Va. (May 12, 2022) -- The defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball champions are heading back to the MEAC title game, following a 12-5 semifinal victory over Beltway rival Howard on Thursday afternoon at NSU Softball Field.
 
The Lady Bears (31-13), winners of a season-long 16 straight games, will now wait for No. 2 Howard, No. 3 Norfolk State or No. 6 Coppin State to advance out of Friday's loser bracket games. Norfolk State and Coppin State will square off at 9 a.m. with Howard taking on the winner at 12 p.m.

 

The winner of the second game will face Morgan State for the 2022 championship on Saturday, May 14 at 12 p.m. The championship game will be streamed live on the MEAC Digital Network on YouTube.
 
A day after scoring 28 runs on 19 hits, including six home runs in the opening win over North Carolina Central, the Lady Bears continued their hot hitting, adding another 12 runs on 13 hits and totaled three more home runs in today's win.
 
After an hour and 18 minute rain delay, Madison Nunez got the top-seeded Lady Bears started in the first inning with a single to center field to score Mia Ewell for the first run of the game. Melissa Paz doubled to right center to score Nunez and give Morgan a 2-0 lead after one inning.
 
Howard (28-22), the No. 2 seed, got a run back in the top of the second when Luz Aguilasocho singled to third base, scoring Alyssa Vasquez, cutting the Morgan State lead in half at 2-1.

 
 
Cayla Sweazie quickly extended the Lady Bears' advantage to 4-1 when she took Tracy Mosley's pitch right over the center field fence. Two batters later Thomas took a pitch over the right center field fence to up the lead to 5-1.
 
Howard bounced back with a two-run shot by Vasquez to left center to cut the Morgan State lead to 5-3 in the top third.
 
Morgan then responded with four runs on two outs in the bottom fourth to increase its lead to 9-3. Thomas led the charge with an RBI single down the left field line to score Danielle Jason and make it a 6-3 game. Mia Ewell followed with a single through the left side, putting runners at first and second for Tayven Rousseau, who reached on an error at third to load the bases. Nunez singled to catcher to score Thomas, increasing the advantage to 7-3. Mia Ewell scored on a wild pitch and Rousseau advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by third.
 
Howard cut into the deficit when Vasquez doubled to left field off Anaya Hunte, who replaced Paz in the fifth inning, which scored Jade Greene and Lealani Ricks to make the score 9-5.
 
Morgan would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Sweazie grounded out to second to score Mia Ewell for the 10th run.
 
Sweazie finished 2-for-4 at the plate, scored a run and drove in a team-high three RBIs to lead the Lady Bears. Thomas went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Mia Ewell also went 2-for-3 with a game-high three runs. Nunez recorded two hits with two RBIs and a run.
 
Paz got the win and improved to 5-2 on the season. She surrendered four runs on three hits and struck out one in four innings of work. Hunte pitched three innings in relief, allowing a run on four hits and recorded two strikeouts.
 
Howard's Mia Gonzales was charged with the loss, falling to 4-6 on the season. Gonzales pitched 2.1 innings, surrendering three runs on three hits and had a strikeout. Vasquez led the Bison with three hits, a game-high four RBIs and two runs scored.
