Softball Sets School Record For Wins At 29; Defeats NCCU, 6-1

Lady Bears extend winning streak to 14 straight.

BALTIMORE, Md. (May 1, 2022)--Morgan State wrapped up its series finale against North Carolina Central on Sunday by earning a 6-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over the Eagles to claim the 2022 MEAC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MEAC Championship (May 12-14) in Norfolk, Va.

In what was already a special day with Morgan State honoring its four seniors on Senior Day and the unveiling of the 2021 MEAC Championship banner ceremony prior to Sunday's contest, the Lady Bears added to it by breaking the school record for wins in a season with 29. The previous mark of 28 wins was set by the 2018 team. Morgan State also ended the conference slate with 18 league victories, the most in school history, passing the 1998 squad which went 16-0 in MEAC play.

Morgan State (29-13, 18-3 MEAC), which has now won a season-long 14 consecutive games, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Mia Ewell scored on a fielding error and Tayven Rousseau, who was playing in her final MEAC home contest, scored when Melissa Paz grounded out at short.

Rousseau took the first pitch she saw in the third inning over the left center fence to increase Morgan's lead to 3-0.

The Lady Bears went back to work in the fourth inning with two more runs, extending the lead to 5-0. Katariina Delph laid down a bunt single which scored Debra Hamilton for the first run of the inning. Sarah Tuzinski put down a bunt to score Delph, giving the hosts a 5-0 advantage.

Asia Thomas tripled to right field in the sixth, scoring Delph to increase Morgan's cushion to 6-0.
NCCU (11-34, 8-13 MEAC) broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh when Garrison doubled off the right field fence to score Mifsud for the game's final score.

Anaya Hunte improved to 14-3 with the victory, while NCCU's Jaden Davis was charged with the loss. Hunte went 6.1 innings, surrendering a run on three hits and threw five strikeouts. Davis gave up six runs on nine hits, two walks and struck out a game-high six batters in six innings.

Thomas went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Cayla Sweazie, playing in her final MEAC home contest, had two hits, while Delph also had two hits and scored twice. Rousseau had a hit, walk, RBI and scored twice.

The Lady Bears will close out the regular season on Wednesday, May 4 when they host Drexel in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Lois T. Murray Field.
