BALTIMORE, Md. (April 15, 2022)--Morgan State entered Friday afternoon's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader against league-leading Maryland Eastern Shore (MDES), one game out of first place.

The Lady Bears would sweep the doubleheader at Lois T. Murray Field, winning 6-0 in the opener, before claiming the second game 5-1 to move a game ahead of MDES in the conference standings.

Morgan State, which has now won five straight, improved 20-13 on the season and 11-3 in the MEAC. Maryland Eastern Shore, losers of four straight, fell to 14-26 overall, 10-4 in the MEAC.

Game 1
Aliya Ewell had quite the game, producing a game-high two hits, including a triple and a homerun, two runs and 3RBIs, all game highs.

Morgan State took a 1-0 lead in the first when
Asia Thomas scored on a ball hit to second base by Ewell. It was 2-0 three innings later when
Ky'Anah Lake stole second and Ewell scored on the throw.

The Lady Bears closed out the opening game scoring four runs in the fifth for the 6-0 score.
Danielle Jason scored the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly hit to center field by Thomas.
Tayven Rousseau doubled to score Katariina Delp to extend the hosts lead to 4-0. Ewell then homered to right field to score Rousseau for the 6-0 cushion. Â

Anaya Hunte, who was coming off pitching the school's first perfect game, while striking out a school record 16 batters on Wednesday, got the win on Friday. Hunte (10-3), surrendered two hits and struck out six batters in seven innings.

The Hawks' Nasya Goodman was charged with the loss and fell to 7-12 on the season. Tatum Kresley and Goodman each recorded a hit to account for the guests' total.

Game 2
Strong pitching and solid defense on both sides dominated the second game.

The Hawks struck first and broke a scoreless game in the fifth inning when Ah-Nayia Oglesby tripled to right field to score R Miller, giving MDES a 1-0 lead.

Maryland Eastern Shore pitcher Ameenah Ballenger carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning when Morgan State's
Aliya Ewell led off with a single to shortstop to break up the no-hit bid.
Melissa Paz followed with a single right field, but the Lady Bears were unable to plate any runs.

Morgan State's bats would wake up in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring five runs to earn the comeback victory.

Mia Ewell got things going for Morgan State with a two-run triple to right field to score Jason and Thomas to put the Lady Bears up 2-1. Aliyah Ewell followed with a single through the right side to score
Mia Ewell for a 3-1 advantage. Morgan State was not done, as Paz doubled down the left field line to score
Aliya Ewell for the fourth run of the inning.
Madison Bolyea then singled to left field to score Paz for the 5-1 lead.

Morgan State finished the game scoring five runs on eight hits, while the Hawks had four hits, scoring a run.

Aliya Ewell and Paz both went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI in the game.
Mia Ewell went 1-for-2 with a run and had a game-high 2RBIs. Thomas and Jason each had a hit and scored a run.

Morgan State's
Victoria Fletcher improved to 5-5 on the season with the win, while Ballenger fell to 4-6. Fletcher allowed a run on four hits and threw a game-high four strikeouts in seven innings. Ballenger was charged with five runs on seven hits and had two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
