SETTING THE STAGE
Morgan State (13-14) wil meet Youngstown State (18-14) in the first round of The Basketball Classic presented by Eracism, Wednesday, March 16. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Beeghly Center. The teams will play in The Marques Haynes Game, which is one of five Legends Games of The Basketball Classic, with the winner receiving a trophy and advancing to the second round of the tournament.
• The Bears will enter the contest coming off a 72-63 loss to Norfolk State last Friday in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals game. The loss snapped the Bears' 5-game winning streak.
• The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. 

 

THE SERIES
• Wednesday's contest will mark the second meeting between the schools ... The Penguins defeated the Bears, 88-64, on Dec. 30, 1985.

SCOUTING THE PENGUINS
• Head coach Jerrod Calhoun enters his 5th season as the Penguins head coach ... Last season, Calhoun led the Penguins to its second straight winning season by posting a 15-12 overall record. It marked the first consecutive winnings season since the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. Calhoun, a 2004 graduate of the University of Cincinnati, began his coaching career at Cincinnati in 2003-04, where he served as a student assistant under Bob Huggins.
• Youngstown State was picked seventh in the Horizon League Preseason Poll and finished the 2021-22 season with a 12-9 conference mark.
• Youngstown State senior Michael Akuchie was named All-Horizon League Second-Team and junior Dwayne Cohill was selected to the all-league third team.
• Youngstown State (18-14, 12-9 Horizon League) finished the season winning six of their last nine games in the Horizon Conference, before falling to Robert Morris (77-73) in the first round of the conference tournament on March 1. Dwayne Cohill scored 25 points  and the Penguins shot 37.1% from the field.
• Junior 6-2 guard Dwayne Cohill (Cleveland, Ohio) leads the Penguins in scoring with 14.2 points, followed by senior 6-8 forward Michael Akuchie (13.7 ppg, 7.8 rpg;  Plantation, Fla.) and senior 6-4 guard  Tevin Olison (12.8 ppg; Memphis, Tenn.).
• The Penguins set a school record for most conference victories with 12 Horizon League wins, and their 18 overall wins rank tied for fourth in YSU's Division I history.
• Youngstown State ranks third in the Horizon shooting 34.7% from deep, led by 5-11 sophomore Shemar Rathan-Mayes (Toronto, Ontario) shooting 40.2% from 3-point range. The Penguins also ranked third in defensive rebounds (24.5) and rebounding margin (2.2).

A WIN WOULD...
• Be MSU's sixth win in its last seven games played.
•  Be MSU's first win vs. Youngstown State.
•  Improve MSU's neutral site record to 3-3 this season.

THREE PLAYERS AVERAGING DOUBLE-FIGURES 
The Bears will enter The Basketball Classic Tournament with three players averaging double-digits.
• Senior guard Malik Miller is the team's leading scorer averaging 12.5 points, 8.7 rebounds and is shooting 55 percent from the field … he scored 14 points with eight boards in the MEAC Semifinals vs. #1 Norfolk State (3/11). 
• Senior Lagio Grantsaan is the team's second leading scorer averaging 10.7 points, to go along with 5.8 rebounds and is shooting 49 percent from the field.
• Junior De'Torrion Ware, an All-MEAC Second Team selection, is averaging 10.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and is shooting 34.5 percent from the field ... he recorded a season-high 27-point outing vs. St. Mary's College of Maryland (Nov. 9).

OFFENSIVE OUTPUT
• The Bears are currently averaging 75.4 points (No. 2 in MEAC) thru 27 games.
• Morgan exploded for 118 points in its 2021-22 season opener versus St. Mary's College of Maryland and followed it up with a 126-71 win against Penn State Allegheny. The Bears beat Goucher 100-41.
• The Bears are shooting 43.9 percent from the field (ranked No. 4) and 31.9 percent from beyond the arc (No. 6).

TURNOVER MARGIN
Through games played on Monday, March 14, Morgan ranked No. 13 in the nation in turnover margin (3.9 ratio, with 419 turnovers and 523 opponent turnovers).

BEAR D 
Morgan is allowing opponents to 72.4 points per game (rank No. 6 in MEAC) and 43.8 percent shooting from the field (No. 8).
• MSU's opponents have shot at a 34.7 percent clip on average from beyond the arc ... this ranks No. 6 in the conference.
• The 19.3 turnovers per game Morgan's defense forces ranks No. 2 in the country.

STREAKING
Morgan has made at least one 3-pointer played in its last 178 games ... That 3-point streak began after the Bears went 0-for-11 against North Carolina Central on Feb. 20, 2016 (Hill Field House). 
• Morgan has made at least three 3-pointers in 131 of 142 games since the start of the 2017-18 season. 
• The Bears made a school single-game record 15 three-pointers (on 32 attempts) at South Carolina State on Jan. 10, 2022…Morgan won that road game, 88-81 in overtime.

HOME COOKING 
Morgan completed the 2021-22 season with an 8-3 mark inside Hill Field House.
• The last time the Bears lost at home was against North Carolina Central (74-64) ... their previous loss was on Jan. 23, 2022 against Howard (91-82) on Jan. 23, 2022.
