WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 19, 2022)-
Charlene Shepherd scored a game-high 21 points but it wasn't enough, as Morgan State had its season-long six-game winning streak snapped, following an 81-63 road loss on Saturday afternoon to Beltway rival Howard at Burr Gymnasium.
Â
Adia Brisker scored 12 points and had six rebounds, while
Kaia Ponder came off the bench to score 10 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the loss, as Morgan State fell to 13-7, 7-3 in the MEAC.
Â
Morgan State and Howard each entered the game in a three-way tie for second with Coppin State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) standings. Coupled with its loss and Coppin State's – upset victory over league-leader Norfolk State, the Lady Bears fell to sole possession of fourth-place in the MEAC.
Â
Howard (14-8, 8-2 MEAC) moved into a three-way tie for first with Norfolk State and Coppin State with the win and avenged last month's loss to Morgan State in Baltimore.
Â
Destiny Howell came off the bench and scored 16 points and tallied a game-high three steals to lead five Bison players in double figures scoring. Reigning MEAC Player of the Week Anzhane' Hutton, recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Krislyn Marsh came off the bench and scored 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting. Iyanna Warren scored 11 points and tied a game high honors with five assists, while Kaniyah Harris added 10 points.
Â
Howard shot 32-of-55 (58 percent) for the game, including a whopping 67 percent in the fourth quarter, connecting on 10-of-15 from the floor to help the Bison outscore Morgan State, 26-17 in the final period.
Â
Morgan State shot 23-of-68 (34 percent) for the game and just 16 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc.
Â
Leading 33-28 at the intermission, the hosts opened up the third quarter using a 10-3 run to jump out to a 43-31 lead, capped off by a jumper from Howell. Howard would extend its lead to 55-46 after three quarters of play.
Â
The Lady Bears began the fourth period using a 7-2 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Brisker, to pull the guests within six points (59-53) with 7:36 left to play. However, Morgan State would miss six of its next seven shots and while the Lady Bears were struggling, Howard went  on a 12-2 spurt during a four-minute span to increase its cushion to 16 points (71-55).
Howard's lead grew to 18 points (81-63), its largest lead of the game, following a jumper by Hutton with 33 seconds to play.
Â
The Bison held a 54-28 advantage over Morgan State in the paint and their bench outscored the Lady Bears' 37-18. Morgan outscored the hosts, 20-10 in points off turnovers and held a 17-11 advantage in second chance points.
Â
Morgan State returns to action on Monday, Feb. 21 when they welcome Norfolk State to Hill Field House. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. The Spartans (12-9, 8-2 MEAC) are coming off a 56-48 loss at Coppin State on Saturday.
