BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 14, 2022) – Morgan State junior Adia Brisker led five Lady Bear players in double figures with 13 points, as the hosts defeated South Carolina State (SCSU), 76-48 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest on Monday evening at Hill Field House.
Playing against each other for the second time in a week, Morgan State (12-6, 6-2 MEAC) swept the season series with the victory, which was its seventh straight over South Carolina State. The Lady Bulldogs, losers of six straight, fell to 3-20, 3-6 in the MEAC.
Taylor Addison recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds and Sunshine McCrae finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Ja'Niah Henson added 10 points, three steals and three assists and Charlene Shepherd came off the bench to also score 10 points and pulled down five rebounds, as the Lady Bears outrebounded SCSU, 50-26 for the game.
"Tonight's game was a good team win. A lot of us had good all-around performances, contributing on multiple sides of the court," said Addison. "I came into the game excited to play and wanted to get another conference win for us and push our standing in conference play up, so I came out hard and ready to work. I knew it was going to take multiple efforts by myself and others to pull out the win."
Senior Ashia McCalla, who entered the game needing nine points to reach 1,000 for her career, hit a jumper with 4:31 remaining in the third period to give the Lady Bears a 48-32 lead and give McCalla exactly 1,000 points for her career. McCalla, who became the 16th member of the Lady Bears' program to reach the scoring milestone, also finished with a game-high four assists, four rebounds and a steal.
"It is surreal to be here. It was a long road to that 1,000th, but I'm glad I was able to do it here at Morgan because of all the great peope I am around," said McCalla. "All the love I've gotten today from my teammates, peers and family is really the highlight of it all."
The Lady Bears, who held a 33-28 advantage at the intermission, broke the game open in the third quarter by outscoring the guests 29-10. Jayla Atmore recorded a steal and scored on a layup to cap off a 12-0 spurt by the hosts, extending the Lady Bears' lead to 60-34 with 1:39 left in the period.
Morgan State used a 12-4 run over a seven-minute span capped off by a jumper by Fatima Black (four points) to give the Lady Bears their largest lead of the game (32 points) at 76-44 with 1:28 left in the contest.
SCSU was led by Nicole Gwynn's 12 points, three assists and three steals, all team highs. Victoria Jordan added 11 points. Trinity Klock had a game-high four blocked shots, a team-high five rebounds to go with four points.
The Lady Bears shot 43 percent (32-of-75) for the game, while SCSU connected on 41 percent (18-of-44) from the floor. Morgan State forced 27 Lady Bulldog turnovers with 15 coming by way of steals.
Morgan State will now face Delaware State at home on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Hornets (0-17, 0-8 MEAC) lost Monday evening at home to Norfolk State, 76-31.
