TOWSON, Md. (Feb. 13, 2022) – The 7th annual James Brown Invitational came to an end on Sunday afternoon at the AMF Towson Lanes with the Morgan State Lady Bears finishing in fourth out of the 14-team field. The Lady Bears, who entered championship Sunday in sixth-place, jumped two spots after going 2-1 in the Bracket Round Best of 7 Baker match play.
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes North Carolina A&T and Delaware State placed first and second, respectively. Duquesne, Morgan State and Mount St. Mary's rounded out the remaining top five.
Morgan State began Sunday by knocking off fifth-seeded Maryland Eastern Shore, 4-0. The Lady Bears then needed five games to upend Mount St. Mary's, the fourth seed, by a score of 4-1.
In their final contest of the day and tournament, the Lady Bears squared off against third-seeded Duquesne for third-place. The Dukes won the first game, 237-199 and Morgan State bounced back to win the second game, 212-189 to even the score at 1-1. However, Duquesne would win the next three games, 238-141, 226-215 and 279-223 to win 4-1 and claim third.
"The ladies responded to bracket play in a convincing way against Maryland Eastern Shore and Mount St. Mary's," said Morgan State head coach
Thomas Falbo. "I'm proud of how well they bowled against Duquesne in the last match. They just ran into a red-hot team. We grew this weekend and now have to keep working to get to that next level."
Morgan State returns to MEAC action next weekend, when it travels to Chesapeake, Va. to compete in the MEAC No. 2 event (Feb. 18-20) hosted by Norfolk State University.
