SETTING THE STAGE
Morgan State (7-12, 2-5) will enter Monday's contest looking to break into the win column when they host South carolina State on Monday at Hill Field House. The Bears will enter the game coming off a 74-64 loss at home to North Carolina Central on Feb. 12. South Carolina State (13-11, 5-3) recorded a 66-58 win at Coppin State on Saturday at the PEC Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
THE SERIES
• Monday's contest will mark the 83rd meeting between the schools ... SCSU leads the series 44-38.
• The last time the two teams met on the hardwood the Bears edged out an 88-81 overtime win over the Bulldogs on Jan. 20, 2022 in Orangeburg, SC. Senior guard Trevor Moore had a season-high 19 points ... Sophomore forward Chad Venning added a career-high 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting and Ware finished with 15 for Morgan (6-7, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) ... De'Torrion Ware posted a season-high 11 rebounds, Venning had nine rebounds, and junior guard Keith McGee scored 14 points.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS (13-11, 5-3 MEAC)
• South Carolina State enters Monday's contest coming off a 66-58 win at Coppin State on Feb. 12. Junior guard Rahsaan Edwards tossed in a team-high 15 points, six rebounds and two steals, teammate Edward Oliver-Hampton recorded the games only double-double with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds in the win. Jemal Davis and Omar Croskey added 10 each respectively for the Bulldogs.
• Tony Madlock was named the new South Carolina State head men's basketball coach on March ,25th , 2021after spending the last three seasons as an assistant at Memphis University alongside former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway. Madlock, who has 25 years of experience as a college assistant and one season (2017-18) as interim head coach at Ole Miss, spent four seasons with the Rebels prior to Memphis.
• SCSU finished the 2020-21 season 1-17 overall and 1-7 in MEAC play ... The Bulldogs ended their season with an 63-58 loss to Florida A&M.
• The Bulldogs are currently 13-11 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
• Freshman 6-3 guard T.J. Madlock is averaging 11.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg and is shooting 39.8 percent from the floor leads the Bulldogs. Redshirt sophomore 6-6 guard Cameron Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) is averaging averaging 10.9 ppg and is shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 26.1 percent from 3-point territory, followed by 6-8 Hampton transfer Edward Hampton-Olivier (Palmer Park, Md.) with 8.0 ppg and 6.4 rpg, and Deaquan Williams is chipping in 6.9 ppg and 6.0 rpg.
• The Bulldogs are averaging 73.0 points per game, while holding its opponents to 70.0 points.
• SCSU is shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 30.0 percent from beyond the arc.
• SCSU is in the top half of the MEAC in several categories, which include ranking first in offensive rebounding (15.2) and second in defensive rebounds (27.4) and third in three-point field goal percentage defense (.322).
LOOKING AHEAD
Morgan State and Howard will clash for the second time this season on Saturday, Feb. 19 in Cleveland at Wolstein Center.
THREE PLAYERS AVERAGING DOUBLE-FIGURES
The Bears will enter Saturday's game against North Carolina Central with three players averaging double-digits.
• Senior guard Malik Miller holds the lead for the team averaging 12.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and is shooting 53.2 percent from the field.
• Junior De'Torrion Ware is averaging 11.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and is shooting 31.9 percent from the field ... he recorded a season-high 27-point outing vs. St. Mary's College of Maryland (Nov. 9).
• Junior guard Keith McGee is averaging 10.8 points, to go along with 1.2 steals and 1.7 rebounds.
OFFENSIVE OUTPUT
• The Bears are currently averaging 76.0 points (No. 2 in MEAC) thru 19 games.
• Morgan exploded for 118 points in its 2021-22 season opener versus St. Mary's College of Maryland and followed it up with a 126-71 win against Penn State Allegheny. The Bears beat Goucher 100-41.
• The Bears are shooting 43.1 percent from the field (ranked No. 4) and 30.5 percent from beyond the arc (No. 6).
TURNOVER MARGIN
Through games played on Sunday, Feb. 13, Morgan ranked No. 12 in the nation in turnover margin (4.4 ratio, with 301 turnovers and 384 opponent turnovers).
BEAR D
Morgan has started off the 2021-22 campaign by allowing opponents to 74.9 points per game (rank No. 7 in MEAC) and 44.7 percent shooting from the field (No. 8).
• MSU's opponents have shot at a 37.8 percent clip on average from beyond the arc ... this ranks No. 8 in the conference.
• The 20.2 turnovers per game Morgan's defense forces ranks No. 2 in the country ... MSU's 9.0 steals per game ranks No. 21 in the nation.
STREAKING
Morgan has made at least one 3-pointer played in its last 170 games ... That 3-point streak began after the Bears went 0-for-11 against North Carolina Central on Feb. 20, 2016 (Hill Field House).
• Morgan has made at least three 3-pointers in 124 of 134 games since the start of the 2017-18 season.
• The Bears made a school single-game record 15 three-pointers (on 32 attempts) at South Carolina State on Jan. 10, 2022…Morgan won that road game, 88-81 in overtime.
