Men's Basketball Opens Season with 96-73 Loss at Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio (Nov. 7, 2022) -- Five Musketeers hit double figures as Xavier men's basketball opened the 2022-23 season with win, topping Morgan State, 96-73, at Cintas Center on Monday evening.

After playing a tightly contested game over the first 10 minutes, with Morgan State taking 21-19 lead with 10:24 remaining, Xavier outscored the Bears 31-5 over the final 10 minutes of the half to take a 50-24 lead into the half with 12 of Souley Boum's 18 first-half points fueling the run. In the second half, the Musketeers extended the lead to as many as 32 before winning by a final score of 96-73.

Boum led all scorers with 23 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor and connecting on four three-pointers. He led the Musketeers in the first half with 18 points, going 4-5 from the field an 3-of-4 from three before halftime. Jack Nunge finished the game with 16 points after leading Xavier with 10 after the break, shooting 4-of-5 from the floor after halftime. Colby Jones finished with 15 points after scoring 13 in the first half. He set a new career-high with nine assists and grabbed six rebounds.

Isaiah Burke scored 16 points (5-12 FG) with four steals and David McCullough scored 16 points (6-9 FG) with three steals to lead Morgan (0-1). Malik Miller led the Bears on the glass with seven boards but had a poor shooting night. He went 1-for-9 from the field and finished with 3 points.

Xavier finished with a 47-29 advantage on rebounds and held a 25-12 advantage on the boards in the first half.

Xavier shot 51.6% from the floor and made five of its 14 attempts from beyond the arc. Morgan countered by making 37.1% and connected on 5-of-17 (29.4%) from beyond the arc.

Morgan will host Penn State Allegheny inside Hill Field House on Thursday, Nov. 10. Tip-off is set for a 7:30 p.m.
