Morgan State Outlasts Howard, 67-61

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 22, 2022)-Dahnye Redd scored a team-high 14 points to lead three Lady Bears in double figures scoring, as Morgan State defeated Beltway rival Howard, 67-61 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Saturday at Hill Field House.
 
Morgan State improved to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC, while Howard fell to 7-7, 1-1 MEAC.
 
Redd shot 3-of-5 and connected on 8-of-11 from the charity line, while Ashia McCalla finished with 10 points and Jayla Atmore came off the bench to add 10 points.
 
Morgan State trailed for the majority of the game and was down 45-39 heading into the final period. The hosts used a 19-8 spurt to start the fourth quarter, capped off by a jumper from Atmore to take a 58-53 lead with 1:37 to play. It would be the last field goal of the game for Morgan State.
 
Howard responded with a 7-3 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Warren to cut the Morgan lead to 61-60 with 26 seconds remaining in the game. The Bison wouldn't get any closer, as Morgan secured the game by knocking down six straight from the free throw line for the 67-61 victory. 14 of Morgan's 28 fourth quarter points came from the free throw line, including the last nine points.
 
Morgan State shot 79 percent (23-of-29) for the game from the free throw line, including 14-of-17 (82 percent) in the final quarter. Howard was 12-of-19 (63 percent).

The Lady Bears out rebounded Howard, 37-34, with Charlene Shepherd leading the way with a game-high nine rebounds. Taylor Addison (nine points) and Redd each grabbed seven rebounds.

Howard scored seven consecutive points to take a 12-3 lead and held a 15-5 advantage with 1:59 left in the first quarter. The Lady Bears closed out the period with a 6-0 run, including a three-pointer at the top of the key by Adia Brisker as time expired to pull Morgan State within 15-11 after one.

The Bison held a 22-13 advantage when Morgan State went on a 13-3 run to take its first lead of the contest (26-25), following a three-pointer by Addison with 34 seconds remaining in the opening half. Howard's Kaniyah Harris would hit the first of two free throws to the even the score at 26 apiece at the intermission.

Atmore tied the game at 32-32 on a jumper with 5:52 left in the third quarter. But the Bison went on a 7-1 run, which concluded with a three-pointer by Howard's Destiny Howell at the 4:41 mark to give the guests a 39-33 lead.

Morgan State got back-to-back baskets by Kaia Ponder and Addison to pull within two points, but Howard closed out the period on a 6-2 run to take a 45-39 lead heading into the final quarter.

Howard was led by Brooklyn Fort-Davis, who came off the bench to score a game-high 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Destiny Howell knocked down 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and finished with 14 points, before fouling out and Iyanna Warren added 13 points. Anzhane' Hutton led the guests with a game-high eight rebounds to go with nine points.
 
The Lady Bears return to action on Monday, Jan. 24, when they visit the Norfolk State Spartans. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. at Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va. The Spartans were a 71-60 winner at home today against Coppin State.
