Bears Take Tough Loss to Norfolk State, 4-3

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 5, 2021) – The Morgan State men's tennis team fell to Norfolk State at home with a score of 4-3 on Sunday. As a result of the win, the Spartans captured this year's MEAC Northern Division title.

The Spartans won the doubles point, but Morgan State (1-1, 0-1 MEAC) rallied to win three of the six singles matches.

Oguzhan Ceylan won the first singles match of the day with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Ignacio Guevel at No. 4 singles. Nihit Rawal followed up as he battled to a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory against Santiago Rendon at No. 3. Rhajzon Rankins beat Ibrahim Abbas in straight sets by posting a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Sebastian Lopez's matchup versus Ivan Ivars at No. 5 turned out to be the deciding match of the day. Lopez took the first set, before Ivars rallied winning the second and third sets in the last singles match of the day. His victory clinched the overall match for the Spartans, who closed out the weekend with three wins in three days on the road over Northern Division opponents.

By virtue of going 3-0 this year in the division, including wins over Howard and Coppin State, the Spartans won their first regular season title – just the second ever – in the league since sharing the Southern Division crown in 2013.

"Although we fought hard, we came up short," said head coach Matthew Townes. "We had plenty of opportunities to put this team away, but we didn't capitalize and it cost us big."

NSU took the doubles point. Federico Rebecchini and Ignacio Guevel won 6-4 over Erturk and Oguzhan Ceylan at the No. 1 position, and Alcaraz and Santiago Rendon 6-4 over Kharchev and Martial Kawunde at the second position.

Morgan State prevented a doubles sweep when the duo of Lopez and Nihit Rawal won 6-2 at the third slot over Ivars and Ibrahim Abbas.
