BALTIMORE, Md. (April 2, 2021)-The Morgan State softball team defeated visiting Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader on Friday by the scores of 7-6 and 9-0 in five innings at Lois T. Murray Field. The Lady Bears, who extended their winning streak to four straight, while improving to 9-3 at home this season, combined to score 16 runs on 18 hits in the doubleheader.
Prior to this afternoon, the two programs last met on April 6-7, 2019 with the Lady Bears sweeping that three-game series in Baltimore, outscoring the Hornets, 16-0. In fact, Morgan State entered today's series having swept the Hornets in the previous six meetings dating back to the 2018 season and had outscored Delaware State a combined 36-0 in those six contests. Today's Game 2 shutout of Delaware State, marked the seventh time in the last eight meetings, that Morgan State has held the Hornets scoreless.
Morgan State 9-7, 6-0 MEAC), which stepped away from league play its last eight games, was playing its first MEAC contest since completing a four-game home series sweep of Norfolk State (3/13-14).
The Lady Bears added to their 1-0 lead with five more runs in the second to extend their cushion to 6-0.
Delaware State began its comeback, scoring a run in the third and fourth innings and adding four runs in the fifth to even the score at 6-6.
Trailing 6-2, the Hornets had bases loaded and scored two runs on a fielding error by the Lady Bears. Caitlin Meyer later doubled to right field to bring home two runners to tie the game up at 6-6.
The Lady Bears scored the game winning run in the bottom of the fifth when
Katariina Delph grounded out to catcher, which allowed
Meikel Turner to score and give Morgan the 7-6 victory.
Haylee Bobos was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
Aliya Ewell, Turner and Delph each went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Emily Raubuch earned the win and improved to 1-1 on the season. Raubuch allowed two hits in 1.2 innings pitched. Starting pitcher Stephani Rundlett went 5.1 innings and struck out six batters.
Game 2
Morgan State tried its best to end the game in the first inning if it could. The Lady Bears jumped on Delaware State, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Damishia Charles singled up the middle to score
Mia Ewell for the first run. After Charles scored later scored when
Ellen Ebbers reached on a fielder's choice,
Meikel Turner singled through the right side to bring home two more runs and give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
Cayla Sweazie then singled to score Turner and
Katariina Delph's ground out pitcher allowed
Jalian Young to score the sixth run of the inning.
Mia Ewell singled to second base to score Sweazie for the 7-0 advantage.
Morgan State then added a run in the third on an RBI single hit up the middle by
Aliya Ewell and added its final run of the game when
Haylee Bobos scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
Mia Ewell finished the game going 3-for-3 with a run and RBI. She also finished with a game-high three stolen bases.
Cayla Sweazie was 2-for-2 with a run and RBI, while Turner went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2RBI and a run scored. Bobos scored a game-high two runs and had two walks, while going 1-for-1 at the plate.
Delaware State's Caitlin Meyer and Jaelyn Baker each was 1-for-2 at the plate to account for the Hornets' two hits for the game.
Mikayla Barnard earned the win for Morgan State and improved to 5-2 on the season. Barnard surrendered two hits and a walk, while throwing two strikeouts in five innings of work. The Hornets' Yanique Spencer (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits, two walks and struck out one batter in 1.1 innings pitched.
Morgan State and Delaware State will return to the field on Saturday with another doubleheader set to begin at noon.
