Towson Comes From Behind To Defeat Morgan State, 5-2

Morgan takes no-hit bid into sixth inning.

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 14, 2021)-The Morgan State softball team had its three-game winning streak over Towson snapped during Wednesday's 5-2 non-conference loss at Towson Softball Stadium. Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to inclement weather.

The two are scheduled to meet again on Wednesday, April 28 in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Towson Softball Stadium.

Morgan State fell to 13-10 overall, while Towson (11-12) ended a three-game losing streak with the win and improved to 4-2 this season against members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Through 5 and ½ innings, Morgan State appeared well on its way to recording a fourth consecutive win over crosstown foe Towson. The Lady Bears held a 2-0 lead since the first inning and their pitching staff went into the bottom of the sixth inning with a no-hitter going.

Within a blink of an eye, everything had changed, as all the momentum shifted to the host Tigers' side.

Morgan State had bases loaded in the top of the sixth, but was unable to add to its lead. Towson's Mackenzie Lake stepped to the plate to lead off the bottom of the sixth and singled to center field for the Tigers' first hit of the game, thus breaking up Morgan's bid of a no-hitter. After Madison Wilson walked, Chloe Poulich doubled to left field to score two runs and tie the game at 2-2. Lauren Ringhiser followed with a double to right field to give the Tigers a 3-2 advantage. Jess DaBreo produced the third straight hit double in a row by the Tigers to increase the hosts lead to 4-2. Rylee Penrod singled to center field to score DaBreo for Towson's fifth and final run.

Morgan State relief pitcher Melissa Paz (0-2) pitch a third of an inning and received the loss, while Towson's Julia Jackson (5-3) earned the win. Morgan State starting pitcher Mikayla Barnard went 3.0 innings and held the Tigers without a run or a hit, while allowing just one walk and had threw three strikeouts.

The Lady Bears jumped on the board first with two runs in the opening inning when Haylee Bobos singled to center field to score Aliya Ewell and Ellen Ebbers, giving the guests the early 2-0. That lead would stand until the bottom half of the sixth inning.

Both teams finished the game with five hits. Mia Ewell led the Lady Bears with a team-best two hits, while Bobos was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI and two walks. Poulich went 1-for-2 with a run and a team-high 2 RBI to lead Towson.

Morgan State will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. this weekend to square off against the MEAC's Southern Division foes, as they take part in the MEAC Round-Up (April 16-18), hosted by South Carolina State.

First up for Morgan State will be a matchup between division leaders, when the Lady Bears square off against MEAC Southern Division leader North Carolina A&T on Friday, before meeting host South Carolina State and Florida A&M on Saturday. The Lady Bears will conclude the weekend facing North Carolina Central on Sunday.
