Morgan State Drops A Pair To UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 20, 2021)-Morgan State returned to the diamond on Saturday afternoon for the first half of a home-and-home non-conference two-day doubleheader against crosstown rival the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). The visiting Retrievers swept the series, defeating Morgan State 9-0 and 5-2 at Lois T. Murray Field.
 
Morgan State fell to 5-5 on the season and has now dropped a season-long four straight, while UMBC improved to 8-4.
 
The two teams will close out their four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader at The Diamond on the campus of UMBC. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
 
Game 1
The visiting Retrievers scored nine runs on eight hits and got a 12 strikeout performance by Courtney Coppersmith, who allowed just one hit and three walks in six innings of work to improve to 5-1 on the season. Shanel Stott went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and 2RBI to lead the guests. Anna Lonchar was 1-for-2 and scored twice, while Julia Keffler drove in two runs on a hit and scored a run.
 
UMBC broke a scoreless game with five runs in the top of the fifth. The Retrievers went back to work in the seventh with four more runs, including a pinch hit solo shot by Wilson, which made it a 6-0 game. Stott doubled to left field to score the final two runs for the 9-0 victory.
 
Morgan State recorded two hits in the game with Mia Ewell and Melissa Paz each going 1-for-3. Mikayla Barnard had three strikeouts in the loss and fell to 3-2 on the season.
 
Game 2
The Retrievers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and the Lady Bears evened the score with two runs in the third. Mia Ewell tripled to score Katarina Delph and later scored herself when Aliya Ewell singled to center field to score Mia.

UMBC reclaimed the lead 4-3 in the fourth on a throwling error by the Lady Bears. The Retrievers added to their advantage with two more runs in the fifth. Coppersmith doubled to score Casey Turner and Madison Wilson later grounded out to short to score Coppersmith for the fifth and final run of the game.
