Bears' five-game winning streak snapped by Norfolk State

BALTIMORE, Md. (February 13, 2021) – Devante Carter scored 20 points as Norfolk State defeated Morgan State 74-69 on Saturday afternoon, snapping the Bears' five-game winning streak.

The Spartans (11-7, 6-4) made 8-of-19 3-pointers and shot 75 percent from the free throw line, while MSU's high-powered offense (82.1 avg) was limited to 38 percent shooting from the field and 35 percent from deep (7-20 3FG).

MSU's (11-5, 6-3) uncharacteristic struggles at the free throw line was a factor in the outcome.

The Bears, who entered as the league's leader in free throw percentage (.770), finished the game converting just 24-for-36 from the free throw line.

Kashaun Hicks and Joe Bryant scored 18 points each for the Spartans who improved to a 39-18 series record against MSU.

Junior guard De'Torrion Ware scored a game-high 25 points (9-10 FT) with six rebounds off the bench for MSU. Senior forward Troy Baxter added 13 points as the only other player to score double-digits for the Bears. Malik Miller and Trevor Moore had seven points and five rebounds apiece.

The score was tied 63-all when Trevor Moore scored a fastbreak layup with 5:43 remaining.

The Spartans responded when Carter scored on a layup (5:11) that put NSU ahead for good.

The Spartans reeled off six straight points during a decisive four-minute stretch that featured a baseline dunk by Kashaun Hicks and he hit a pair of free throws to put NSU ahead 69-63 with 1:37 left to go.

Ware hit two free throws to cut the Spartans lead to 69-66 with 41 seconds to go but the Bears were unable to force a turnover in the remaining moments as NSU clinched the win behind key free throws by Carter and Joe Bryant down the stretch.

The Bears trailed 34-30 at halftime.
