SETTING THE STAGE
Morgan State (4-5) will continue non-conference action when they travel to face the Longwood Lancers (5-4) on Saturday, December 11. The Bears look to build off a 77-71 home victory against Millersville on Monday night. Longwood will enter the contest coming off an 78-58 home victory against Delaware State on Saturday (Dec. 4). Saturday's game will be broadcast by the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN.com). Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
THE SERIES
Saturday's contest will mark the second meeting between the schools.
• Dec. 7, 2019 -- Senior guard Stanley Davis led four Bears in double-figures with a game-high 18 points and Morgan State ended their five-game losing streak as they defeated Longwood 73-65 inside Hill Field House.
SCOUTING THE LONGWOOD LANCERS
• Longwood enters Saturday's contest coming off an 78-58 home win against Delaware State on Saturday (Dec. 4). Behind 17 points from Isaiah Wilkins and a 31-13 run over the game's final 11:03, the Lancers (5-4) pulled away in the second half to dispatch the Hornets and improve to 5-1 on their home court. The Lancers hit 11 three-pointers and had 21 assists on 31 made field goals.
• Isaiah Wilkins (Winston-Salem, N.C.) is one of three players averaging double-figures for the Marauders. Wilkins, who previously played at Wake Forest, leads the Lancers by averaging 12.1 points and 6.3 rebounds. He's also shooting 48.6 percent from the field and 48.6 percent from 3-point territory. Junior 6-foot-7 forward Leslie Nkereuwem (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is averaging 12.1 points and 4.9 boards off the bench, and Justin Hill (Houston, Texas) is averaging 10.2 points, 4.7 rebounds is leads the team in assists (4.3 avg). DeShaun Wade (Virginia Beach, Va.) is chipping in 9.7 points and 3.0 rebounds.
• The Lancers added former N.C. Central point guard Jordan Perkins for the 2021-22 season ... the veteran guard started all four years for the Eagles, during which NCCU won three MEAC titles and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
• The Lancers are currently averaging 76.1 points thru its first nine games and are shooting 45.7 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from downtown.
• Longwood has limited opponents to 63.4 points per game and 40.6 percent shooting, including 29.8 percent from three.
• The Lancers are currently 5-4 overall and 1-0 in Big South play and 5-1 at home.
• Griff Aldrich enters his fourth season as head coach and in just three seasons at the helm, Aldrich has led the Lancers to a bevy of milestones and program firsts, including multiple Division I postseason tournament invitations, record Big South wins and back-to-back top-five conference finishes. During that time, the Lancers have engineered one of the most drastic turnarounds in all of college basketball and ascended to the upper tier of the Big South.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BEARS
• Dec 6, 2021 -- Trevor Moore scored a season-high 18 points with four steals off the bench to help Morgan State secure a 77-71 victory over Millersville on Monday night inside Hill Field House.
• Millersville had the ball trailing 72-71 with under 40 seconds to play. Moore intercepted a pass intended for Caden Najdawi in the post, and he was fouled on his way up the court. Moore made both free throws for a three-point lead.
• Millersville had one last chance to tie it, and James Sullivan took a three from the right wing, but it hit front iron. Forced to foul to stop the clock, Millersville sent Morgan to the line two more times in the final 10 seconds, where the home team extended its lead.
• Malik Miller finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Keith McGee came off the bench to score nine points, hitting 2 of 4 shots from 3-point territory, while Seventh Woods added eight points and six rebounds
• Morgan State made 21-of-26 free throws while Millersville attempted just six all game. The Marauders also committed 24 turnovers, which turned into 30 Morgan points.
NONCONFERENCE NUMBERS
• Morgan State is 17-17 (.500) in nonconference regular season games under coach Kevin Broadus, including a 4-5 start to the 2021-22 season.
• Morgan is 9-4 in nonconference home games under Broadus, a record which includes a perfect 3-0 mark so far this season.
CHRIS PAUL HBCU CHALLENGE
The Bears early schedule includes playing eight of nine games away from Hill Field House, highlighting that stretch was back-to-back games in the Chris Paul HBCU Challenge in Phoenix, where the Bears met Grambling State (Nov. 28 / L, 74-59) and Hampton (Nov. 29 / W, 60-47).
• The first-of-its-kind event for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) will be played at the Footprint Center (Home of the Phoenix Suns) and air on ESPN Networks.
• The two-day doubleheader will feature the likes of Norfolk State University, Morgan State University, Hampton University and Grambling State University.
NBA HBCU CLASSIC
The NBA today announced an extension of its ongoing commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with new programs designed to create greater opportunity for students and alumni, encourage economic advancement and further celebrate their rich traditions.
• The celebrations will be highlighted by a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup between Howard University and Morgan State University men's basketball teams. The game will be played at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland on February 19, 2022 and will be broadcast live.
• The NBA 2K League will host events on HBCU campuses to introduce students to careers in gaming and esports, creating pathways for students to pursue careers in the growing industry.
• As part of this partnership, the NBA will develop new programs and events focused on the HBCU community – specifically around professional development, career advancement and increased support and awareness for HBCU athletics and institutions.
• "Chris Paul has shown unwavering support for HBCUs and brought an awareness to creating opportunities for the student-athletes at these institutions," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. "The Hall of Fame is proud to share in Chris's vision and bring this event to life alongside Boost Mobile and the Phoenix Suns."
