Morgan State goes 4-1 at Coppin State Invitational and in 2nd Place after Day 1

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 21, 2021)-The Morgan State Lady Bears found the toughest lane conditions they faced all season, and grinded out a solid 4-1 record in Saturday's Traditional Match format at the Coppin State Invitational held at AMF Woodlawn Lanes.
Highlights of Friday's 5-game Baker Matches:
  • Morgan State posts a 4-1 record, moving their season record to 27-10.
  • Ashanti Fernandes led the scoring for Morgan State averaging 192.0 for five games.
Saturday's Traditional Matches:

Match #1
Morgan State 937, Kutztown 883
Morgan State took control about midway through the match and held onto the lead against the Bears of Kutztown in what would be Morgan State's highest scoring set of the day. The scoring was fueled by Ashanti Fernandes who struck five strikes and were it not for a solid 8 pin in the 7th frame would have ended up with eight in a row. La'Monique Berrios contributed with a 202, Cheyenne Washington scored a 183, Natalia Miranda Vega with a 166 and Carrington Beaman with a 144.

Match #2
Morgan State 860, Wagner 832
The next match saw the Bears facing their NEC opponent, Wagner on what became difficult transition in this match and the rest of the day. In this Wagner match, Morgan State set their minds into filling frames and finding an opening to strike when they could. Again, it was Fernandes leading the Bears with a 203. The Bear's scoring in Match #2 as follows: Fernandes 203, Berrios 179, Washington 169, Miranda Vega 167 and Beaman with a 142. Aliya Adams came in as a substitute in Game 2 and would start in the next three games.

Match #3
Morgan State 881, Coppin State 802
Morgan State still was having trouble in Match #3 adjusting to the lane conditions, which lengthened as the day progressed. Their execution outlasted the host and crosstown rivals in Coppin State with more even scoring. Morgan State's scoring: Miranda Vega 202, Berrios 174, Fernandes 172, Washington 167 and Aliya Adams 166.

Match #4
Morgan State 875, Virginia State 546
The Morgan State ladies kept up their winning ways against Virginia State. Again the scoring was lower than it has been all season for the Bears. Strikes were hard to come by in this match, which saw the Bears jump out to an early lead and not look back. Miranda Vega led the scoring with a 184, Berrios with 180, Washington contributed with a 178, Fernandes with a 170 and Adams rounding out the scoring with a 165.

Match #5
Morgan State 811, Caldwell 818

In their match against Caldwell University, Morgan State struggled finding a consistent line to the pocket, catching some bad breaks along the way. In the end, it was Caldwell who came on strong in the 9th and 10 frames to bowl around the Bears in the final match of the day. Naomi Smith came into the line-up and filled the last three out of four frames she bowled. Carrington Beaman also came back into the line-up in this match. Morgan State scoring: Miranda Vega 191, Fernandes 173, Washington 170, Berrios 146 and Adams 131.

Kutztown leads the tournament with a pinfall of 4,435 and the Bears are only 69 pins back in second place with a total pinfall of 4,366.

Coach Falbo is happy with a 4-1 record. "We averaged over 193 in this same house a week ago. This lane pattern transitioned in a unique way. We like challenges, so I know tomorrow we will be inspired to figure out these lanes when they are in transition and max out our scoring to win this tournament."

Tomorrow the Bears head into playing five matches of 5-game Baker Total Pinfall at AMF Woodlawn Lanes in Baltimore, Maryland. After the fourth match is played tomorrow, there will be a position round and the winner of the tournament will be based on total pinfall for both days after the position round of play.
