Bears Fight to Complete Comeback Rally at Coppin State, 79-76

Senior forward Troy Baxter scored a season-high 28 points with seven rebounds.

BALTIMORE, Md. (January 30, 2021) – Despite finding themselves in a 14-point hole midway in the second half, the Bears fought back with four players in double-figures, and a clutch performance from senior standout Troy Baxter to complete and hold on to a 79-76 comeback win at Coppin State.

With the win, Morgan State improves to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.  The Bears moved within a half-game of Coppin State atop the league's North Division.

Baxter led all scorers with a season-high 28 points on 10-for 22 shooting and had seven rebounds and a block. Junior guard Sherwyn Devonish finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while junior guards Trevor Moore and De'Torrion Ware chipped in 13 points each for the Bears who were the tougher team down the stretch.

The Bears out-rebounded Coppin State by a commanding 55-38 margin, including 17 offensive boards that led to a 20-4 advantage in second chance points.

Kyle Cardaci paced the Eagles (6-10, 5-2) with 21 points (10-11 FT) off the bench. Anthony Tarke, the MEAC's leading scorer and rebounder, finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, four steals and four blocks. Koby Thomas added 12 points and Yuat Alok and DeJuan Clayton had 10 apiece.

Morgan State trailed virtually most of the second half. After MSU coach Kevin Broadus was ejected for arguing a no-foul call at the 14:48 mark, the Bears were down 46-38. The Eagles rolled off a 9-3 spurt to take their largest lead of the contest at 55-41 13:28 remaining.

The Bears began taking advantage of scoring opportunities and wasted little time in getting back into the game. Coppin's lead was cut to 59-53 at the midway point after baskets by Devonish and Ware.

A missed dunk by Baxter led to a long rebound by Ware who dropped in a deep three as part of a 7-2 run by the Bears. Coppin's lead was 59-56.

Baxter hit a pair of free throws at the 6:27 mark to trim the lead to 61-60 with 6:26 to go.

CSU point guard DeJuan Clayton fed KobyThomas off a pick-n-roll for a two-handed dunk to give the Eagles a 66-62 lead (5:36).

The Bears were able to keep it close in the closing minutes, due in part to the Eagles struggles at the free throw line.

Devonish fouled out of the ballgame with 3:10 sending Clayton to stripe where he split a pair.  The Eagles led 72-68.

The Bears responded with two free throws from Malik Miller (2:43), followed by Trevor Moore handing off to Baxter for a 15-foot baseline jumper to tie the game at 72-72.

The Eagles scored on a basket inside the paint by Tarke to take a 74-72 lead. On the ensuing possession, Baxter buried a 3-pointer from the right corner to give the Bears a 75-74 lead with 1:15 minute left to go.

After a missed shot by Clayton, the Bears got a layup by Ware to extend the lead to 77-74 with 25 second remaining. A steal by Tarke led to a fastbreak layup by Cardaci to trim the Bears lead to 77-76 with 14 seconds left.

Following a timeout by MSU with 11 seconds to go, the Bears were able to inbounds the ball to Baxter who was immediately fouled. He stepped up to the line and drained both free throws to make it 79-76. Kenan Sarvan's heave as the clock expired was no good.

MSU shot 81 percent (13-16) from the free throw line, while the Eagles connected 24-of-37 (64.9 percent).
