Lady Bears Sweep Series Against Delaware State; Win Third Straight

DOVER, Del. (Jan. 17, 2021)-Dahnye Redd scored a game-high 20 points to lead three Lady Bears in double figures scoring, as Morgan State defeated host Delaware State, 72-65 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division contest at Memorial Hall on Saturday.
 
Morgan State improved to 6-2 overall, 3-1 in the MEAC with the win and remained in a first-place tie with Howard in the division standings. Delaware State dropped to 2-6 overall, 1-3 in the MEAC.
 
Redd shot 6-of-14 from the floor and went 8-of-9 from the free throw line, while Ja'Niah Henson and Ashia McCalla each added 10 points, as Morgan State swept the weekend series and won its fourth straight over Delaware State. Adia Brisker came off the bench to add nine points and tied Redd with a team-high seven rebounds.
 
The Lady Bears, winners of their second season-high three-game winning streak, shot 39 percent (24-of-61) for the game and was 3-of-12 (25 percent) from three-point range. Delaware State finished the day shooting 40.7 percent (22-of-54) and knocked down 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Hornets also connected on 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the free throw line.
 
Morgan State, which never trailed in the contest, scored the first seven points of the game and went up by 11 points (23-12) on a three-pointer by Elaija Demeza with 8:24 left in the second quarter.
 
The host Hornets countered with a 9-0 run, capped off by a jumper by Lyric Turner to pull within 23-21 with 6:25 left in the first half. Morgan State went back to work, scoring 11 straight points to take its largest lead of the first half of 13 points (34-21) when Henson hit a jumper with 1:59 left in the second quarter.
 
Khaliah Hines scored on a jumper and added the free throw to complete a three-point play to end the second quarter scoring and give Morgan State a 13-point lead (39-26) at the intermission.
 
The guests increased its lead to as much as 14 points (44-30) when McCalla drained a three-pointer with 7:24 remaining in the third period. The Hornets scored eight consecutive points in the midst of a 16-6 run to pull within 50-46 when Janasia Law hit a jumper with 26 seconds left in the third.
 
Delaware State nearly erased the 14-point deficit when DeMaurea Moore scored on a layup and Turner followed with a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter scoring and bring the Hornets within a point at 52-51 at the 8:56 mark.
 
That would be as close as the Hornets would get, as Morgan State used a 10-4 run to push its lead to seven (62-55), following a jumper by Henson with 3:07 to play. The Lady Bears, who shot 21-of-29 (72 percent) from the free throw line, finished off the game going a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final 1:33 to secure the victory.
 
Morgan State took advantage of Delaware State inside, scoring 40 points in the paint, while also finishing with 17 second chance points. Defensively, the Lady Bears forced 17 Delaware State turnovers and scored 22 points off them.
 
Delaware State was led by Turner's 18 points, while DeMaurea Moore pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Miajah Bullock came off the bench to score 10 points and Melissa Sam finished with eight, as the Hornets bench totaled 31 points for the game.
 
The Lady Bears will be off for a week, before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 30 and Sunday, Jan. 31 when they visit crosstown rival Coppin State for a two-game series. Both games tip-off at noon and will be played at the Physical Education Complex.
