MSU Mourns The Loss of Former Bear Golf Champion Rodney "Binx" Watts

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Morgan State former golf standout Rodney "Binx" Watts recently passed away.

Binx began to cut his path by joining the golf team at Mount Saint Joe High School in Baltimore (Class of 1962) where he would make the news using his amateur status to challenge segregation rule in local private golf clubs.

During his senior year at Morgan under coach Julius Taylor, Binx would captain the Bears to its first CIAA college golf championship in 1967. That team included other local golf legends like Tim McCready who have all been lifelong friends and ambassadors to a game that took two lawsuits (1942 & 1948) to desegregate in Baltimore City.

Binx graduated from Morgan that same year and would follow in his dad's footsteps in graduating from the University of Maryland Law School in 1970.

Binx played for more than 60 years and was a professional since 1995. He traveled the country for a year while playing in PGA Senior Tour, Senior Series Tour, and Golden State Tour events. He then served as an Assistant Professional at Pine Ridge Golf Course for 6 ½ years and was Head Professional at Marlton Golf Club in Prince George's County for 3 years.

Binx has given lessons to thousands of students of all ages and skill levels. In addition to private lessons, Binx taught junior camps and adult clinics. Binx was a Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Apprentice and is a member of Morgan State University's Varsity "M" Hall of Fame.
