Lady Bears Defeat Rival Coppin State, 68-42; Sweep Season Series Again

Davis picks up career coaching victory No. 399.

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 29, 2020)-Dahnye Redd scored a game-high 18 points and Chelsea Mitchell added 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, to lead Morgan State to a 68-42 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over Coppin State in the 82nd "East vs. West" game at Hill Field House on Saturday.
 
The victory marked career coaching win No. 399 for Morgan State head coach Ed Davis, as well as his 50th victory at Morgan State.
 
Reed and Mitchell each pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, falling one shy of recording their sixth and 14th double-doubles, respectively, this season.
 
Morgan State (15-13, 11-4 MEAC), which improved to 9-1 at home this season, earned its fifth consecutive regular season win and the sixth victory out of the last seven meetings against their crosstown rivals. The Lady Bears have now swept both games of the annual regular season series the last two years.


 
The hosts used a 14-2 run to take a 17-6 lead and held a 17-10 advantage after a quarter of play. The Lady Bears increased their cushion to 28-12 when Elaija Demeza drained a trey to put Morgan State up 1:08 left in the half. Morgan State limited Coppin to just four points in the second period on 2-of-18 shooting to take a 28-14 lead at the intermission.
 
The Lady Bears carried a 43-24 advantage after three quarters and used a 10-6 run to extend their lead to 55-30 after Mitchell knocked down two free throws with 5:31 left in the contest. A three-pointer by Lana Skripkina triggered a mini 5-0 spurt by Morgan State, which ended with a jumper by Dawn Gipson to give the hosts its largest lead of the game at 26 points (66-40) with 33 seconds remaining.
 
Morgan State posted 10 steals in the game. Jihayah Chavis, who finished with eight points, five rebounds and two steals, collected a game-high four steals in the win.
 
The Lady Bears shot a perfect 13-for-13 from the charity line, as Redd connected on eight straight and Mitchell knocked down four.
 
Coppin State (3-24, 3-13 MEAC), which never led in the game, received a game-high 12 points by Oluwadamilol Oloyede on 6-for-6 shooting. Chance Graham scored nine points and Aliyah Lawson added eight and a team-best three assists.
 
MSU will close out the regular season on Thursday, March 5, when it hosts second-place Norfolk State in the season finale at 5:30 p.m. The contest, which will mark 'Senior Day' for the Lady Bears, will also be for a share of second-place to wrap up the league's regular season.
 
Norfolk State (17-10, 11-3 MEAC), who currently sits in sole possession of second in the MEAC, defeated visiting Howard, 69-60 in overtime on Saturday. The Spartans outscored Howard 9-0 in the extra period to avoid the upset.
 
Norfolk State won the season's first meeting against the Lady Bears, defeating Morgan State, 64-57 in Norfolk, Va. (2/15).
