Lady Bears Knock Off S.C. State; Move Back Into Third In MEAC Standings

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Feb. 17, 2020)–Chelsea Mitchell scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, both game highs, to record her 12th double-double of the season and lead visiting Morgan State past South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest on Monday evening at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
 
Dahnye Redd added 12 points and eight boards and Jihayah Chavis scored 10 points for Morgan State, which earned a season sweep over the Lady Bulldogs with the win. Morgan State evened its record at 13-13 overall and improved to 9-4 in the MEAC.
 
The Lady Bears also moved into sole possession of third-place in the league standings with the win, coupled with Delaware State's loss at league leader Bethune-Cookman. Morgan State and Delaware State will meet on Monday, Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House.
 
Morgan State scored the game's first seven points and then used a 7-0 run to end the first quarter and take a 12-point (16-4) lead after one quarter of play. The Lady Bears held host S.C. State to just one field goal in the opening half on 1-for-15 shooting for 6.7 percent and two free throws. Morgan State shot 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) in the period.
 
The Lady Bears, who have won four of their last five road contests, extended their lead to 36-17 at the half.
 
The Lady Bulldogs (3-22, 2-10 MEAC), who have dropped their last seven consecutive games, closed the gap to 38-27 behind eight straight points by Heniaya Moton early in the third period. But Morgan State scored 14 of the next 16 points to build a 52-29 advantage after three quarters.
 
The Lady Bears' lead swelled to their largest of the game at 27 points (56-29) when Dezyree Morales scored on a tip in with 6:35 left in the game. Morgan State held a 60-33 advantage, following a layup by KaMaree Donald with 3:59 remaining, which would be the final points for the Lady Bears.
 
The Lady Bulldogs, who outscored Morgan State 18-8 in the final period, scored the game's final 14 points for the final margin.
 
South Carolina State was led by Jacquece Alston and Chrisana Scott, who each scored 11 points. Alston also had a team-high 12 rebounds for S.C. State, which dropped its seventh straight game. Moton added eight points and Jayah Hicks seven, along with eight rebounds in the loss.
 
Morgan State shot 37 percent (24-of-65) for the game, including 4-of-15 (28 percent) from three-point range. The Lady Bears were perfect from the free throw line at 8-8.
S.C. State shot 16-of-58 from the floor for 28 percent and knocked down 4-of-13 (31 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lady Bulldogs finished the game converting 11-of-16 (69 percent) from the free throw line.
 
Both teams committed 11 turnovers in the game. The Lady Bears enjoyed a 50-36 edge on the glass.
 
Morgan State returns home to close out the regular season with its final three games being played at Hill Field House, beginning with the Delaware State contest on Feb. 24.
 
The Hornets won this season's first meeting, 69-61 in Dover, Del. (1/4). Delaware State (11-13, 7-4 MEAC) dropped a 66-55 decision to league-leader Bethune-Cookman this evening.
