Women’s Basketball Suffers First Loss; Drops Road Contest At Towson

TOWSON, Md. (Dec. 20, 2020)-The Morgan State Lady Bears took to the road for the first time this season, as they brought their unbeaten record to crosstown rival Towson on Sunday afternoon.

Playing for the first time since 2013, the host Tigers would hand Morgan State not only its first loss of the season, but its worst loss in the series, following a 95-59 victory at SECU Arena. The win improved the Tigers to 16-10 all-time against Morgan State, and ended the Lady Bears' eight-game winning streak dating back to last season.

Towson (5-1) was led by Kionna Jeter, who shot 14-of-19 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three-point range to finish with a career-high 33 points. Aleah Nelson scored 14 points and dished out a game-high 11 assists for a double-double, while Shavonne Smith added 10 points in the win.

Morgan State, which fell to 3-1 on the season, was led by Dahnye Redd, who finished with a team-high 21 points. Ja'Niah Henson added 13 and Ashia McCalla scored 11 points. Nina Carpenter grabbed a game- and season-high 10 rebounds and added two more blocks to give her nine on the season.

Towson, which had scored 100-plus points its previous two games, including a school-record 113-point outing on Friday against Salem, scored the first six points two minutes into the game. The Lady Bears settled in and used a 7-1 spurt to pull within 8-7, after a jumper by Elaija Demeza with 5:25 to play in the opening quarter. The Tigers countered with a 16-2 run to take a 24-12 lead after a quarter of play.

A three-pointer by Nelson capped off a 15-2 run in the second quarter, giving the hosts a 30-point advantage (46-16) with 3:48 until halftime. The host Tigers would take a 50-23 cushion into the locker room.

The second half was much of the same, as Towson used a 13-3 run in the fourth period to take its largest lead of the game at 40 points (90-50) after a layup by Maggie Sharp with 3:38 remaining in the contest.

The Lady Bears finished the game shooting 29 percent (19-of-65) and went just 3-for-12 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. Morgan State did connect on 18-of-22 from the free throw line for 82 percent.

Towson shot 57 percent (38-of-67) from the floor, was 7-of-18 (39 percent) from three-point range and hit 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the charity stripe. The Tigers also recorded 20 assists to just two for Morgan State and held a 36-31 rebounding advantage over the Lady Bears.

Morgan will look to rebound when it returns to action on Monday, Dec. 28, when the Lady Bears travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on the Syracuse Orange at 7 p.m.
