BALTIMORE, Md.  – The Bears suffered a loss on Wednesday afternoon by dropping a 62-55 contest against Mount St. Mary's at Hill Field House in the 2020-21 season opener.

The Bears (0-1) suffered their first loss against the Mountaineers since a 90-80 victory on February 9, 1984. Meanwhile, Mount St. Mary's improved to a 7-3 mark in the all-time series against Morgan State that began during the 1966-67 season.

Junior Malik Miller led the team with a game-high 19 points behind 8-for-12 shooting from the field. He also added eight rebounds and a steal while playing 33 minutes.

Senior Troy Baxter Jr. posted 17 points (7-13 FG) with five rebounds. Trevor Moore chipped in nine points and Isaiah Burke added six points and four assists off the bench.

Sherwyn Devonish fed Trevor Moore for layup to give the Bears an 8-6 lead in the first 7 minutes of the ballgame. Baxter would hit a pair of layups during a 6-1 spurt to push the lead to 14-7.

The Mount countered with a 10-3 run to tie the game at 17-17 with 7:13 left before halftime. Malik Jefferson finished off a dunk  to take a 21-19 lead at the 5 minute mark and held the Bears to a single field goal in the remaining minutes. Josh Reaves buried a 3-pointer help give The Mount a 28-22 lead at the break.

The teams traded 3-pointers to open the second half before Damian Chong Qui began putting his imprint on the game. The Mount's point guard connected with Jefferson for dunk to take a 33-25 lead with 17:28 remaining.

Malik Miller kept the Bears within striking distance while scoring on a number of tough layups. When Isaiah Burke knocked in a pair of free throws the Bears trailed 40-35 with 12 left to play. The Bears then rallied off a 9-1 run during 4 minute stretch and Miller's scored on a layup to cut The Mount's lead to 46-44 with 7:28 left. Meanwhile, The Mount made 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the floor and converted just 4-of-22 from long range.
