Baxter Ignites Second Half Surge, Leads Bears Past S.C. State

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 6, 2020) – Troy Baxter scored 16 points in the second half, including 14-straight to help Morgan State beat South Carolina State 77-63 on Monday night in the Bears' MEAC home opener.

Morgan State improved to 8-9 overall, 2-0 in conference play and 5-2 inside Hill Field House.

Baxter, who was scoreless (0-4 FG) in the first half, drilled a 3-pointer to give the Bears its first double-digit lead of the night at 49-38 (9:53). It turned out to be just the beginning of 14 consecutive points by the 6-foot-9 Tallahassee product.

Baxter's stretch included a few 3-pointers, free throws and a pair of crowd-pleasing dunks during a 4-minute stretch. Following Baxter's barrage the Bears held a 60-47 lead with 5:53 left to go.

Malik Miller added 15 points (5-6 FG) and Stanley Davis had 14 points and six rebounds for the Bears (8-9, 2-0 MEAC), who shot 43% from the field in the first half and led 29-24 at halftime.

Sherwyn Devonish-Prince added 11 points and six assists.

Morgan State finished shooting 45%, outrebounded the Bulldogs 36-35 and outscored them 38-18 in the paint.

"I would have never guessed that," said Morgan State coach Kevin Broadus of the Bears' efficiency in the paint against the Bulldogs' starting trio of 6-8 forwards. "I thought we were outscoing them with our speed because they're big, they're physical, and they're good."

"We just kept moving the ball, and our thing was, don't get stagnant just because they're playing zone, and we attacked. The thing I'm proud of our guys about today is, we had 20 assists. They shared the game. Sherwyn and Stanley really shared the game with five and six assists. So I'm happy about that."

South Carolina State (6-8, 1-1) was led by Damani Applewhite who finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Tashombe Riley scored 12 points and Ian Kinard chipped in 10 points.

The Bulldogs were limited to just eight field goals in the first half and finished the game shooting 37% from the field and 4 for 18 from beyond the arc.

Morgan State matches up against the Florida A&M Rattlers on the road on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Tallahassee, Fla., before heading to Daytona Beach, Fla. to matchup against Bethune-Cookman on Monday, Jan. 13.

BEAR NOTE:
