Morgan State Falls to No. 4 seed Wake Forest in NCAA Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (May 3, 2019) - The Morgan State men's tennis team fell to the No. 4 seed Wake Forest 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in the Winston-Salem Regional.

"Although we didn't complete the upset today, I'm extremely proud of our efforts getting to this point and competing today," said MSU head coach Matthew Townes. "We had a great season and I look forward to improving from this point."
 
Melios Efstathiou and Siddhant Banthia started the match with a 6-2 win against Oguzhan Ceylan and Nihit Rawal at No. 3 doubles.  Then Borna Gojo/Alan Gadjiev defeated Shrey Gupta/Sebastian Lopez 6-1 at No. 1 doubles to give Wake Forest the team point.
 
Leading 1-0, the Deacs continued to perform on the singles courts where Petros Chrysochos, the reigning NCAA Singles champion, topped Serhii Kharchev 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, Melios Efstathiou posted a 6-0, 6-1 win against Sebastian Lopez at No. 5, Siddhant Banthia dropped Shrey Gupta 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Rrezart Cungu finished off the match by being credited with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Oguzhan Ceylan at No. 4. Borna Gojo took a set from Arjun Ramakrishnan at No. 1 and Bar Botzer took a set from Nihit Rawal at No. 3.

Morgan State made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament after defeating South Carolina State last Saturday to claim the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title for the first time in program history. The Bears finished their historic season with a 14-8 overall record.

Wake Forest (30-3), the defending NCAA team champions, will take on Kentucky in the NCAA Regional Finals on Saturday.
