BALTIMORE, Md. (April 6, 2019)-Morgan State swept Saturday afternoon's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division doubleheader against Delaware State, by identical 4-0 scores at Lois T. Murray Field.
The win marked not only the fourth straight victory in the series, but also the fourth shutout win over Delaware State, as the Lady Bears have now outscored the Hornets 24-0 in the last four meetings.
Morgan State (12-21, 3-2 MEAC), which is on a four-game winning streak, was led by Gabriella Gorosave, who went 4-for-2 at the plate and had 2 RBI on the day. Sarah Heagy finished 2-for-5 with a game-high three runs, while Evvie Buehlman had 2 RBI on one hit. Stormy Zyzyk provided Morgan State's lone extra base hit, finishing 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
The Lady Bears struck first with Giselle Alvarez singled to right field to score Damali Young to give Morgan State a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. Morgan State added to its lead when Buehlman singled to right field in the fourth inning to score Heagy for a 2-0 advantage.Â
The hosts upped their lead to 4-0 when they added two more runs in the sixth inning for the victory.
Stephanie Rundlett got the win and improved to 8-14 on the season. She would surrender four hits and a walk through seven innings, while throwing a game-high three strikeouts to secure her first complete game shutout win of the season.
In Game 2, the Lady Bears would score four runs on six hits, while holding Delaware State (6-22, 3-5 MEAC) scoreless on five hits.
Morgan State broke a scoreless game with two runs in the second inning when Heagy scored on a bunt single by Mikaela Browdy and Jalian Young stole third for the 2-0 lead.
The Lady Bears scored their final two runs in the fourth inning when Zyzyk doubled to right field to score Kyley Fijalkowski. Zyzyk would then score on a single hit by Gorosave for the final run.
Gorosave went 2-for-2 with a RBI, while Heagy finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.Â
Mikayla Barnard (4-5) got the complete game victory for Morgan State to improve to 2-0 in shutouts. Barnard threw a game-high five strikeouts and scattered five hits across seven innings pitched.
The Lady Bears will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at noon. The contest will mark 'Senior Day' for nine Morgan State seniors (Giselle Alvarez, Amber Arlinghaus, Mikaela Browdy, Damishah Charles, Gabriella Gorosave, Erica Hawkins, Caitlyn Williams, Damali Young and Stormy Zyzyk), who will be playing in their final MEAC home contest at Lois T. Murray Field.
