EMMITTSBURG, Md. (April 2, 2019) – The Morgan State men's tennis team posted a 4-3 road victory at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon in Emmittsburg, Md.
The Bears improved to 8-6 on the season, while the Mount dropped to 2-14.
"It's a good feeling to get back in the win column, especially being shorthanded with our captain [Arjun Ramakrishnan]," said MSU coach Matthew Townes.
Mount St. Mary's grabbed the point from doubles play after they tabbed wins in the first and third flights. Parth Sharma and Jackson Wood defeated Serhii Kharchev and Shrey Gupta 6-3 in the number one spot. Gabriel Santos and Alonso Garcia recorded a forfeit win in the third flight.
Morgan State won the second, third, fourth, and fifth flights to clinch the match victory.
Sebastian Lopez and Alonso Garcia battled in the fourth flight for which team would take home the win. Lopez battled to a 7-6 by in the first set, 7-6. Garcia powered back in the second set 6-2 to force the third tie-breaker set. Lopez won that set comfortably, 6-2 that gave Morgan State the match win.
"The guys showed great heart to win a tough one," Townes added. "I'm very, very proud of my guys."
Jackson Wood defeated Serhii Kharchev 6-1, 7-5 in the number one flight while Evan Hine won by forfeit in the number six flight for the Mountaineers' two points from singles action.
The Morgan State men's squad will host Howard for a match on Saturday, April 6 at the MSU Tennis Courts. First serve is set or 1 p.m.
