Softball Completes Sweep Of Rival Coppin State; Earns 20th Win Of Season

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 28, 2019)-The Morgan State softball team completed its series against rival Coppin State with an 11-0 victory over the Eagles in five innings in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division contest on Sunday afternoon at the Coppin State Softball Field. The win was the second consecutive shutout for Morgan State over the Eagles, as the visiting Lady Bears swept the season series.

Morgan State (20-24, 10-4 MEAC), which secured its third straight 20-win season, concluded the conference slate going 3-1-1. The Lady Bears' lone MEAC series loss came to Norfolk State in the league opener, as Morgan State dropped two of the three games. The lone tie came against Maryland Eastern Shore (MDES), as the teams split the doubleheader. The third game against MDES got cancelled and likely will not be made up.

Coppin State (9-30, 5-10 MEAC) ended the regular season with a four-game losing skid and will now prepare for the upcoming MEAC Tournament (May 8-11) in Ormond Beach, Fla.

On Sunday the Lady Bears wasted no time playing the role of spoiling the Eagles' Senior Day. Senior Damali Young, who entered the game needing to score four more runs to break the school's single-season runs record, led off the game with a homerun to right field to give the guests a 1-0 lead.

Morgan State added three more runs in the top of the second inning when Gabriella Gorosave homered to left field to drive in three runs and extend the Lady Bears' lead to 4-0.

The Lady Bears went back to work in the fourth inning, scoring six runs to up their advantage to 10-0. Gorosave singled up the middle to score Stormy Zyzyk and Kyley Fijaklowski for two runs. Young then followed with a double hit to center field to bring in Mikaela Browdy, as Morgan State extended its lead to 7-0. Two batters later, Damishah Charles singled through the left side to score Gorosave and Young. Young's run would be her last of the game, giving her 46 runs scored this season, just one run shy of tying former Lady Bear Tanisha Kemp (47 runs in 1997), for the all-time single-season high.  Sarah Heagy then stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which allowed Alvarez to score the sixth run of the inning and increase the Lady Bears' lead to 10-0.

Morgan State scored its last run of the game in the sixth inning when Evvie Buehlman flied out to left field to score to Rachel Daugherty for the 11-0 lead.

Stephanie Rundlett (12-15) pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and a walk in five innings of work.

Gorosave led the Lady Bears with her 2-for-2 performance at the plate with a game-high 5 RBI and two runs scored. Young was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and two runs. Charles went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI and a walk.

The Lady Bears will conclude the 2019 season on Wednesday, May 1 when they host Rider in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Lois T. Murray Field.

Despite already celebrating Senior Day during its MEAC home finale against Delaware State (4/7), these will be the final collegiate games for Morgan State's nine seniors (Giselle Alvarez, Amber Arlinghaus, Mikaela Browdy, Damishah Charles, Gabriella Gorosave, Erica Hawkins, Caitlyn Williams, Damali Young, Stormy Zyzyk).
