Morgan State men advance to MEAC Tennis Championship Final

NORFOLK, Va. (April 26, 2019)-- The Morgan State men's team defeated Southern Division No. 2 seed North Carolina Central 4-1 to advance to the final of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tennis Championship in Norfolk, Va., on Saturday.
 
Serhii Kharchev topped Amit Baran 6-4, 6-2 at number two singles to clinch the match for the Bears.
 
Morgan State, the Northern Division's top seed, is now set to face the Southern Division's top seed South Carolina State in the final Saturday at 12 p.m.
 
"NCCU played so much tougher than the first time we played them this year," head coach Matthew Townes said. "Our young men rose to the occasion and I'm so proud of our efforts."
 
Morgan State won the doubles point before taking three singles victories. Nihit Rawal and Oguzhan Ceylan won 6-4 before Serhii Kharchev and Arjun Ramakrishnan outlasted Pablo Juez Torres and Amit Baran 6-4 to clinch the point.
 
Rawal, an All-MEACFirst Team selection, made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Christos Dagklis at number three.
 
NCCUgot on the scoreboard when the MEAC's Player of the Year Gabriel Cucalon handed Ramakrishnana 6-0, 6-2 defeat at the number one flight.
 
Ceylan, an All-MEAC Second Team selection, added a 6-1, 6-3 win against Thanos Spyropoulos to finish off the Eagles by a final score of 4-1.
 
South Carolina State defeated South No. 3 seed Bethune-Cookman 4-1, notching the doubles point before Aleksa Daskalovic (No. 2 singles), Marcelo Rodriguez (No. 3) and Sel Bel Ali (No. 6) all won in straight sets to dispatch of the Wildcats.
 
Bel Ali defeated Jonathan Thomas 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the match.
 
Morgan State has its sights on capturing its first ever MEACMen's Tennis Championship, while South Carolina State's men will go for their 16th MEAC title overall, and their second straight.
