Men’s Tennis Shutout Coppin State; Earn Eighth Straight MEAC North Division Title

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 15, 2019) – Morgan State men's tennis took the court Tuesday afternoon and wasted little time in dismantling Coppin State. The Bears shutout their cross-town rivals, 4-0, and solidified their eighth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division title.

Morgan State improved its record to 11-7 overall and 3-0 in conference action, while the Eagles dropped to 0-15 overall (0-3 MEAC).

"I'm excited we could continue what seems to be tradition here, but is really not a given," said MSU coach Matthew Townes. "Our division is getting stronger and I'm very excited that we rose to the challenge every match."

"We have a much bigger goal in mind, and we have been working towards that since the first day of the season."

From the start, the Bears set a strong precedent in doubles play that carried over to their singles matches.

The sophomore pairing of Shrey Gupta and fresh Sebastian Lopez easily dispatched Prabh Bal and Henrique Sada, 6-2, while the duo of sophomore Oguzhan Ceylan and junior Nihit Rawal followed suit, beating Jorge Rodriguez-Rey and Sam Scala-McNeill by the same score.

When it came to singles, the Bears continued to roll. Morgan State clinched the overall match, 4-0, as Ceylan and  sophomore Serhii Kharcev and Rawal secured singles wins — all finishing in dominating fashion.

The Bears will gear up for the 2019 MEAC Tennis Championships, held next week (April 25-27) at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Admission to the championships is free.
