Lady Bears Drop Final Meeting To Savannah State, 53-35

SAVANNAH, Ga. (Feb. 11, 2019)-Jalea Gray scored a game-high 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Myasia Jones added 12 points, as Savannah State defeated the visiting Lady Bears, 53-35 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest on Monday evening at Tiger Arena.

Alexxus Sowell had a game-high five blocked shots and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to help the Lady Tigers outrebound Morgan State, 42-32. Savannah State's win ended Morgan State's season-long three-game winning streak, as well as a four-game winning streak over the Lady Tigers.

The contest marked the final regular season meeting between the two teams, as Savannah State will leave the MEAC at the end of the 2018-19 academic calendar and return to Division II. Morgan State now leads the all-time series, 8-7.

Morgan State (8-17, 6-5 MEAC) entered the game averaging 54.5 points per game, but was scoring 70.6 points during its three-game winning streak.

Savannah State (6-13, 4-6 MEAC) would hold the Lady Bears under 10 points in three of the four quarters, including a quarter low, seven points in the third.

Holding a 21-19 lead at the intermission, Savannah State extended its cushion to eight points (27-19) with a 6-0 run three minutes into the third period. A jumper by Ashia McCalla ended the Lady Tigers' run with 6:35 remaining, but Savannah State closed out the period on a 10-5 run, capped off by a basket from Gray to give the hosts a 37-26 lead after three quarters of play.

Morgan State would trade baskets with Savannah State for the first six-and-a-half minutes of the fourth quarter, before a jumper by Jihayah Chavis and a free throw by Kayla Horn brought the visitors within eight points at 43-35 with 4:34 to play. That would be the last points for Morgan State, as Savannah State closed out the game on a 10-0 spurt for the victory.

Savannah State shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) for the game, including 50 percent in both the third and fourth quarters. Morgan State shot 26.4 percent (14-of-53) for the game.
