Diane Scores 34 to Lead Matadors Past Morgan State

David Syfax led the Bears with 15 points and 8 rebounds.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. (December 31, 2019) – Lamine Diane poured in a game-high 34 points and had 13 rebounds to help CSUN beat Morgan State 93-82 on New Year's Eve at The Matadome. 
 
Morgan State falls to 6-9 on the season, while CSUN improved to 4-11 and extended its series record against the Bears to 7-0.
 
Diane, who entered the game fresh off a 28 point and nine rebound performance at Boise State on Saturday, was 11 of 21 from the field for the Bears (6-9), including 12 of 20 from the free throw line. He also had three assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
 
CSUN's (4-11) Elijah Harkless finished with 20 points (7-11 FG), Terrell Gomez had 16 and Lance Coleman II added 13.
 
Morgan State also had balanced production. David Syfax came of the bench to lead the Bears in scoring and rebounding with 15 points (7-9 FG) and eight boards. Sherwyn Devonish-Prince had a solid floor game and finished with 14 points, while Isaiah Burke and Stanley Davis added 13 points each, and Isaiah Burke had 10. 
 
Malik Miller was solid off the bench and finished with 9 points and four boards.
 
The teams traded the lead throughout the early going of the first half. Devonish scored on a tough layup high off the glass and Lagio Grantsaan buried a 3-pointer during an 8-2 run to give the Bears a 26-22 lead with 10:39 remaining. 
 
CSUN responded with a 6-2 spurt and a 3-pointer by Coleman helped the Matadors retake the lead for good at 31-29. Harkless scored six points during a 19-2 run and a jumper by Gomez made the score 50-38 with just over a minute remaining in the half.
 
The Bears trailed 52-42 at the intermission. 

Morgan State trimmed the lead to 52-44 when Burke scored a layup for the basket of the second half (19:33), but that was as close as they would get.

Diane scored 19 of his 34 points during the second stanza and CSUN led by as many as 21 points after Gomez hit a 3-pointer to give his team a 85-64 lead with 6:55 remaining.

Despite the deficit, the Bears never quit and was able to chip away at the lead in the final minutes. Devonish scored a basket with 1:32 remaining to pull within 92-80, however the Matadors were able to preserve the lead down the stretch.

Morgan State shot 48 percent from the field compared to 54 percent for CSUN and the Bears held a 40-38 edge in the paint. The Matadors converted on 23 of 34 free throws (67 percent).

Next Up: Morgan State will begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play beginning with a road contest at Delaware State (1-13) in Dover, Delaware on Jan. 4 at 2:00 p.m.
