BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 14, 2019)-The Morgan State Lady Bears return to the floor following an 11-day layoff to face crosstown foe the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. at the UMBC Events Center. The contest will be the seventh straight away from home for the Lady Bears who last played a home game on Nov. 11. MSU VS. UMBC SERIES NOTES: UMBC leads the all-time series, 14-12 after defeating the Lady Bears last season, 73-68 at Hill Field House. Prior to last year's meeting, the two programs last met on Dec. 7, 2014 with Morgan State earning a 69-61 victory at RAC Arena.
 
BEAR CLAWS: Morgan State (3-6) is in the midst of a three-game losing skid, following its 51-39 road loss at Hofstra (12/4). Chelsea Mitchell finished with a team-high 16 points and pulled down a team-best six rebounds. Jihayah Chavis added six points and along with Mitchell, recorded a game-high four steals. Chavis moved into seventh-place all-time at Morgan State in steals with 175. Morgan State has been led by Dahnye Redd, who is posting 14.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, while Mitchell is scoring 12.2 points and leads the team in rebounding at 8.0 boards per game and total steals with 34. Ashia McCalla is adding 11 points and 4.7 rebounds.
 
A LOOK AT THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC (2-7), in the midst of a six-game losing skid, will play at home for the first time since Nov. 13. The Retrievers are coming off an 82-48 loss at Syracuse on Dec. 8. It was their sixth straight road game. Janee'a Summers and Te'yjah Oliver each scored 15 points to lead UMBC. Lucrezia Costa came off the bench to pull down a team-high five rebounds. Oliver leads the Retrievers with 19.7 points per game, while Summers is adding 10.2 points. Jen Gast and Summers are both averaging 7.4 rebounds per outing, while Oliver is recording 2.3 steals per game. Morgan State will be the third and final Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe UMBC will face this season. UMBC is 1-1 against the MEAC, falling at home to Howard, 72-61 on Nov. 9, before defeating Coppin State, 71-48 on Nov. 13. 
 
NEXT UP: After seven consecutive games on the road, Morgan State will finally return to the friendly confines of Hill Field House on Wednesday, Dec. 18 to welcome Texas State at noon.
 
CHAVIS MOVES INTO SEVENTH ON STEALS CHART: Senior Jihayah Chavis picked up four steals in the last game at Hofstra (12/4) to move a steal past former Lady Bear Lisa Mickens (174 from 1997-01) for seventh all-time at Morgan State. Chavis, who currently has 175 steals for her career, is now 26 steals away from passing Whitney Johnson (201 from 2003-07) for sixth.
 
11-DAY LAYOFF: The Lady Bears will end a season-long 13-day layoff when they take the floor against UMBC on Sunday. It will be Morgan State's first game since dropping a 51-39 decision at Hofstra (12/4). The layoff was so that Morgan State could focus on final exams.
 
DAVIS RECORDS CAREER VICTORY NO. 380: Morgan State head coach Ed Davis Jr. recorded his 380th career coaching victory, following the Lady Bears' win against Washington Adventist (11/11). Davis, who is in his eighth season with the Lady Bears and fourth as head coach, has an overall record of 381-307. He recorded career win No. 370, following the Lady Bears' win over UMass Lowell (12/29/18). Davis has guided his teams to a total of four NCAA Tournament appearances, while at Bowie State (3) and Delaware State (1) and two Division II Sweet 16 appearances.
  
REMATCH: Three of Morgan State's non-conference opponents this season (Washington Adventist, Michigan and UMBC) will be rematches from the 2018-19 campaign. Morgan State went 1-2 a year ago against those opponents with its lone win coming against Washington Adventist. The Lady Bears are currently 1-1 this season with a win over Washington Adventist and its loss coming at Michigan.
 
I WILL FOLLOW HIM: The Lady Bears' Jan. 4, 2020 MEAC contest at Delaware State will be played at 4 p.m. instead of the original 2 p.m. slate. Morgan State's men's team will instead battle the Hornets at 2 p.m. It will mark the first time in nearly three decades that the women's team will follow the men's game in a MEAC doubleheader.
 
MORGAN STATE 'GRIT': The Morgan State athletic department has adopted the slogan GRIT for the 2019-20 athletic campaign. GRIT, which stands for Growth, Resiliency, Integrity and Teamwork, was introduced by Morgan State Director of Athletics Dr. Edward Scott at the start of the Fall semester. GRIT will define all 15 of Morgan State's athletic teams on and off the field of play this season.
