Bear Shots
BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 11, 2019)-Morgan State senior Jihayah Chavis led six Lady Bears in double figures scoring with a game-high 16 points, as Morgan State defeated visiting Washington Adventist, 84-52 in a non-conference game on Monday evening at Hill Field House.
Fellow senior Chelsea Mitchell shot 5-for-8 to score 13 points and junior Dahnye Redd also added 13. Sophomore Ashia McCalla and freshman Ja'Niah Henson each scored 10 points, while senior transfer Sydney Searcy, who was making her Morgan State debut, came off the bench to score 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.Â
Morgan State (2-1), which went unbeaten during its mini two-game homestand, improved to 5-0 all-time against NAIA member Washington Adventist.
After a three-pointer by Maggie Tien trimmed the Morgan State lead to 11-8 with 3:49 remaining in the opening quarter, the hosts responded by scoring the next 10 points in the midst of a 16-3 run to close out the quarter and take a 27-11 advantage.
The hosts led 50-26 at the intermission and took a 70-32 lead into the fourth quarter after holding the guests to a six-point third period.
The Lady Bears recorded a season-high 24 thefts. Mitchell led the way with a game-high six steals, while Dezyree Morales and Searcy each had five. The Shock had four steals with Sarah Shamdeen collecting two. Â
Washington Adventist (2-1) was led by Shamdeen, who scored a team-high 11 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Shamdeen, however also committed 12 of the Shock's 35 turnovers. Tien came off the bench to score 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range. Amber Morman pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and added nine points on 4-of-5 shooting.Â
The Shock finished the game shooting 40.4 percent (19-of-47) from the floor, including 25 percent (6-for-24) from beyond the three-point arc. Morgan State connected on 31 of 80 attempts for 38.8 percent and shot 20 percent (6-of-30) from three-point range.Â
The Lady Bears forced a season-high 35 turnovers, which they turned into 49 points. Morgan State also held an 18-0 advantage in fast break points and a 42-22 cushion in points in the paint.
Next up for Morgan State will be a road swing through the State of Nebraska, as the Lady Bears return to NCAA Division I competition. First up will be a trip to Lincoln, to take on Nebraska on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m., before traveling to Omaha to visit Nebraska at Omaha on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m.
