BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 26, 2019)-The Morgan State women's basketball team will conclude its brief two-game homestand, as well as the first half of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) slate when it plays host the Rattlers of Florida A&M on Monday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Bears will look to end the first half on a high note and even both their MEAC and home records. Morgan State is 4-5 at home this season after going 10-3 last season.
 
BEAR CLAWS: The Lady Bears (5-16, 3-4 MEAC) are coming off a 73-69 overtime loss to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. Freshman Ashia McCalla stole the ball at half court, her game-high third steal, and launched a three-pointer from the right elbow to even the score at 63 all and send it to an extra period. Adre'onia Coleman scored a team-high 17 points and pulled down six rebounds, despite dealing with foul trouble. McCalla came off the bench to score 16 points and had six rebounds. Jihayah Chavis scored nine of her 13 points in the first quarter and Kayla Horn finished with 12 points, five rebounds and two steals. Elizabeth Sherrill grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Coleman is averaging 16.3 points and 8.0 rebounds to lead the Lady Bears in both categories. Ashia McCalla is scoring 9.1 points a Jihayah Chavis is adding 8.5 points and leads the team in assists (48) and steals (41).
 
SNAKE VENOM: Florida A&M (3-15, 1-5 MEAC), losers of nine of its last 10 games, enters Monday's contest coming off a 73-53 loss at Coppin State on Saturday. Candice Williams scored 17 points and had a team-leading four steals. Jasmine Ballew added 10 points, while Dy'Manee Royal and Tyra James had a team-high seven rebounds apiece. The Rattlers committed 31 fouls, as Coppin State shot a total of 37 free throws, connecting on 24. FAMU was 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Mya Moye is averaging 10.9 points per game, while Williams is scoring 9.9 points and has 44 assists on the season. Royal leads the team in rebounding with 6.8 per game.
 
MSU VS. FAMU SERIES NOTES: FAMU leads the all-time series, 35-14. Last season Morgan State defeated the Rattlers, 59-44 in Baltimore (2/12) to end a three-game losing skid against FAMU.
 
NEXT UP: The Lady Bears will take the short trip across town to face the rival Eagles of Coppin State on Saturday, Feb. 2 in Round 1 of the annual 'East vs. West' game. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. from the Physical Education Complex on the Coppin State campus.
 
NO LONGER SEARCHING: The Lady Bears recorded their first road win of the season, following a 65-62 victory at North Carolina Central (1/21). The win put to rest an 0-8 start in true road games this season and a combined 0-11, including three neutral site losses away from Hill Field House. 
 
COLEMAN RECORDS SEVENTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Adre'onia Coleman picked up her seventh overall double-double of the season in the win at North Carolina Central (1/21). Coleman would score a game-high 21 points and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds. The Baltimore native would also add a block in 40 minutes of play.
 
COLEMAN EARNS COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS HONOR: Adre'onia Coleman was named Madness Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, Jan. 14 by the staff of College Sports Madness. Coleman averaged a double-double of 20.5 points and 11.5 rebounds last week to lead the Lady Bears. Coleman began the week scoring a game-high 24 points, while pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds, including 11 defensive against Savannah State (1/7). She then scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Lady Bears past South Carolina State (1/12).
 
LADY BEARS HELD TO SEASON-LOW IN SCORING: Morgan State was held to a season-low 29 points in a loss at North Carolina A&T (1/19). The Lady Bears were limited to five points in the opening period and shot 22-of-54 (22 percent) from the field and went just 3-for-12 from the free throw line. 
 
FAITHFUL EIGHT: With the dismissal of three players prior to the start of the season due to conduct detrimental to the team, two players sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules and a fourth player removing herself from the team after just three games, the Lady Bears have gone into battle each game with eight strong and dedicated players. Despite a tough non-conference schedule and the shortage of numbers, the Lady Bears have fought in every game and have picked up their play since the start of the MEAC schedule.
 
LADY BEARS PICKUP BACK-TO-BACK WINS: Morgan State recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season, following victories over Savannah State (1/7) and South Carolina State (1/12). It was the Lady Bears' first two-game winning streak since Feb. 10-12, 2018, following road wins at Savannah State (2/10) and Florida A&M (2/12).
 
COLEMAN NAMED MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior guard/forward Adre'onia Coleman was named MEAC Player of the Week (1/8). It was her second MEAC weekly honor this season for Coleman, who also earned the award (11/20). The Baltimore native averaged a double-double for the week, recording 21 points and 14.5 rebounds per contest to help the Lady Bears to a 1-1 week. Coleman began the week with 18 points and 14 rebounds to go with two assists, two steals and a block against Maryland Eastern Shore (1/5). She then dropped a game-high 24 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds in a win over Savannah State (1/7). It was her third straight double-double and sixth of the season.
 
FARWELL: The Lady Bears' win over Savannah State (1/7) marked the final meeting in Baltimore between the two programs as members of the MEAC. Savannah State will leave the conference and return to the Division II level at the end of the 2018-19 academic calendar. Morgan State and the Lady Tigers will square off one final time during the regular season in their annual 'Orange & Blue' battle on Monday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Tiger Arena in Savannah, Ga.

DAVIS RECORDS VICTORY No. 370: Morgan State head coach Ed Davis Jr. recorded career coaching victory 370, following the Lady Bears' win over UMass Lowell (12/29). Davis, who is in his seventh season with the Lady Bears and third as head coach, has an overall record of 374-295. He has guided his teams to a total of four NCAA Tournament appearances, while at Bowie State (3) and Delaware State (1) and two Division II Sweet 16 appearances.
 
COLEMAN HAS CAREER DAY: Senior Adre'onia Coleman scored a career-high 26 points in the Lady Bears' loss to UMBC (12/20). The 5-foot-10 forward, shot 8-of-16 from the floor, while adding six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block against the Retrievers.
 
DAVIS A THREE-TIME HALL OF FAMER: Morgan State head coach Ed Davis Jr. was inducted into his third Hall of Fame in September 2017, when his 2006-07 Delaware State women's basketball team was inducted for capturing the 2007 MEAC title. Davis was also inducted into the Bowie State University Hall of Fame in 2014 as a coach, where he guided the Lady Bulldogs to three CIAA titles and a pair of Division II "Sweet 16" appearances and in 2008 he was inducted into the West Virginia State University Hall of Fame as a basketball player.
