Morgan State Softball Eliminated By Northern Division Foe Hampton, 5-3

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 10, 2018)-A day after winning its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship game in nine years, the historic 2018 season for the Morgan State Lady Bears came to an abrupt end in a loser's bracket elimination game on Thursday evening at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex against a familiar northern division foe in Hampton.

Playing in what would be the last time ever as MEAC members, with Hampton leaving the conference in less than a month for the Big South Conference, the Lady Pirates, who were the only northern division team to defeat Morgan State in a three-game series (winning two games) this season, would eliminate the Lady Bears, 5-3.

Hampton (24-27), who earlier in the day was coming off a 4-3 elimination game victory over Coppin State in 13 innings, got on the board first against Morgan State. Taylor Warrick singled up the middle to score DaSha Hill in the first inning, giving Hampton a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Bears (28-17) got a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead at 2-1 when Giselle Alvarez singled to right field, scoring Damali Young and Caitlyn Williams.

Hampton evened the score in the fourth when Sarah Kollas singled to right center with one out to score Cassidy Blackwell. The Lady Pirates then plated two more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-2.

Morgan State fought back and loaded the bases in the bottom sixth. Erica Hawkins scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-3. But the Lady Bears were unable to generate another run.

Hampton got run back in the seventh when Hill scored on a ball hit up the middle by VanDenburg for the 5-3 victory.
