Softball Sweeps Norfolk State In MEAC Doubleheader

Begg, Rundlett Combine For 17 Strikeouts

NORFOLK, Va. (April 6, 2018)-The Lady Bears softball team recorded a sweep of host Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division doubleheader on Friday afternoon at NSU Softball Field.

Morgan State (15-13, 6-2 MEAC) shutout the host Spartans 4-0 in Game 1, before claiming an 8-2 victory to close out the twinbill.

The victories extended the Lady Bears' season-long winning streak to five straight, while helping Morgan State win its second consecutive MEAC series, after dropping two-of-three games at Hampton during the league's opening weekend.

Due to inclement weather expected in the Tidewater area, Saturday's originally scheduled doubleheader was moved to Friday. The third and final game of the series will go on as scheduled on Sunday at noon.

Morgan State pitchers Amy Begg and Stephanie Rundlett combined to throw 17 strikeouts. Begg, who improved to 9-6 on the season, threw a game-high seven strikeouts, while allowing just one hit by the Spartans in the opener. The victory was the fourth shutout for Begg this season, extending the all-time career leader's mark to 11. Rundlett (6-6) collected 10 strikeouts in the Game 2 victory.

The Lady Bears would finish the day totaling 12 runs on 18 hits and had 11 RBI. Norfolk State (15-22, 5-6 MEAC) scored two runs on seven hits and committed six total errors.

Damali Young, Anissa Morales and Evvie Buehlman each went a combined 4-for-7 at the plate to lead the Lady Bears. Young also finished with four runs and a RBI, while Buehlman had 2 RBI and Morales had a RBI and scored a run.

Giselle Alvarez and Gabriella Gorosave also had a productive day. Alvarez scored three runs and had 3RBI, while going 2-for-6 at the plate. Gorosave had three hits in six at bats and tallied 2RBI and a run scored.
