Men's Tennis Rallies to Knock Off Norfolk State, 5-2

Bears earn their 11th straight match victory of the season.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (April 15, 2018) – Morgan State's men's tennis team had to use a bit of late-match resolve to push past Norfolk State for a 5-2 victory over the Spartans on Sunday at the Virginia Beach Tennis & Country Club.
 
After losing the doubles point, the Bears responded by battling back to earn their 11thstraight match victory of the season. With the match on the line, Morgan State won four of five singles matches and improved its record to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action.
 
"What an amazing day of tennis!" said MSU coach Matthew Townes. "I think this was a big test, and we definitely needed it."
 
"After completely getting swept in doubles, the guys responded with some of the best singles play of the year. I was very impressed with the way they handled adversity, and this match has to stay in recent memory."
 
Norfolk State (7-5, 2-1 MEAC) opened the match by snaring the doubles point. Freshmen Sebastian Lopez and Ogukhan Ceylan were dropped by Andres Alcaraz and Dan Dumitrascu 6-2 on Court 1. Ignacio Guevel and Vini Da Silva then clinched it on Court 2, defeating senior Lucas Krusinski and junior Arjun Ramakrishnan.
 
Freshman Shrey Gupta tied the match at 1-1, defeating Flavian Fernandez 6-4, 6-4 on Court 3. The Spartans recaptured the lead when Alcaraz beat Krusinski 7-6, 6-2. 

The Bears responded by posting the last three wins of the match. 
 
Lopez dug in and earned a tough 7-6, 7-5 victory against Dan Dumitrascus on Court 4, followed by a three set victory on Court 1 by Ramakrishnan versus Da Silva, 6-0, 6-7, 6-4. Sophomore Nihit Rawal capped the afternoon with a solid performance by dispatching of Ignacio Guevel, 6-1, 6-2.

Morgan State is back in action at home on Tuesday versus the Delaware Blue Hens (16-7, 0-3 CAA). Match time is for 4 p.m at the MSU Tennis Courts.
