Lady Bears Defeat Rival Coppin State On Senior Night, 73-59

Senior Class Combines For 58 Points; Spears Scores Career-High 26

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 26, 2018)-On a night where Morgan State would honor six seniors prior to the start of Monday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest against crosstown rival Coppin State, the senior class would put on one last show in their final home contest.

Led by senior Lexus Spears' career- and game-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting, the Lady Bears would defeat Coppin State, 73-59 in the home finale at Hill Field House.

The win would give Morgan State (15-13, 8-7 MEAC) a 10-3 mark at home this season, its best home record since the 2009-10 team finished 9-1 at Hill Field House. The 10 victories also rank second most at home in the last 15 seasons to the 2008-09 team, which went 12-4.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Spears twice this season matched her previous career-high of 22 points. To set a new career high in her final home game in front of her family and for it to come against rival Coppin State, she couldn't imagine a better ending.

"Absolutely not. It couldn't be written any better," said Spears of Monday night's performance. "I did what I needed to do to pull out this team win and it was just a blessing it happened on Senior Night in front of my family."

"It meant the world to me [to have my family here]. I say it all the time, my parents are the 'realist people on my team'," said Spears. They were there through the good, the bad, the happy and the sad. Anytime I felt like giving up, they were there to keep me focused. So, playing in front of them and giving them the chance to experience my college basketball experience was amazing."

Fellow seniors Tykyrah Williams and Braennan Farrar would also have a night to remember. Williams, would score 17 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range and Farrar finished with 15 points, giving her 1,546 career points to move past former Lady Bear Tracey Carrington (1,536 points from 2011-15) for third-place all-time at Morgan State.

Along with Spears, the three would combine to score 58 of Morgan State's 73 points.

"For all of us combining for 58 of the 73 points, I felt like it was our goodbye and thank you Morgan State," said Farrar. "They gave us all a chance to broadcast our talents these last four years and it has been a pleasure. My last four years with Ky (Tykyrah) and Lex, has been nothing but fun and exciting. I feel both of them helped me grow in different ways. I remember all of us coming in and starting our first game in Division I basketball at the University of Georgia not knowing how much of a difference it was from high school ball."

"Lex getting her career-high tonight was amazing, although she could have had 30. I'll take the 26," added Farrar. "Ky played her hardest today and I loved it. It seemed like she embraced every moment of it. And for her to pass Tiny (Corin Adams and Tracey Carrington) on the rebounds list is a big accomplishment. For me moving into third all-time in scoring, man, what a blessing it is."

Farrar, who entered the contest needing six points to pass Carrington on the charts, would accomplish that feat during a remarkable third quarter for the Lady Bears.
Morgan State, which held a 32-31 halftime lead, would turn up the defensive intensity in the third quarter, and hold the guests to just one field goal and three points in the period. It would mark the third time this season that the Lady Bears held an opponent to three points on one field goal and a free throw.

Coppin State scored the first points of the third quarter on a layup by Maraiyah Smith to take a 33-32 lead and Morgan State rattled off 20 straight points over a seven-minute span to take a 52-33 lead. During the run, Farrar scored on a fast break layup to give the Lady Bears a 46-33 lead and move into third-place all-time at Morgan State in scoring. Her basket gave her 1,537 career points, moving her one point past Carrington.

"When I got the bucket to do so, the only person I looked for was Tracey," said Farrar. "I thank Tracey for teaching me freshman year to never let up or give up, always keep pushing."

A free throw by Coppin State's Chance Graham ended Morgan State's 20-0 spurt with 1:40 left in the period and the Lady Bears held a 55-34 advantage after three quarters.

After a three-pointer by Genesis Lucas cut the Morgan State lead to 17 points (57-40), Spears scored on back-to-back baskets to up the lead right back to 21 points (61-47).

But the visitors would not go away, as Coppin scored 10 unanswered points in the midst of a 13-3 run to pull within 10 points at 63-53. Lucas ended the run with a jumper to cut the deficit to 10 with 4:14 to play. That would be as close as the Lady Eagles would get.

Coppin State (6-21, 5-10 MEAC) was led by Lucas, who finished with a team-high 22 points, five assists and a game-high three steals. Candice Beverly finished with 20 points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

The Lady Bears shot 51 percent (26-of-51) for the game, while Coppin State shot 21-of-52 for 40 percent.

As big as Morgan State's seniors were on the offensive end in scoring, they also played a big role on the glass. The Lady Bears would outrebound Coppin State, 39-26 for the game with the seniors accounting for 27 of the 39 rebounds.

Spears finished with a game-high eight rebounds, while Aunesha Williams came off the bench and pulled down seven boards and Tykyrah Williams grabbed six rebounds to move into 10th-place at Morgan State with 568 rebounds. Farrar added four rebounds and Tayler Miller came off the bench to grab two.

The Lady Bears held a 36-20 advantage in points in the paint, with Spears providing the majority of the damage down low. Morgan State also outscored the Eagles, 13-1 in second chance points.

"It's honestly just all bitter sweet. I feel like at the beginning of the game maybe we were all so focused and amused by 'Senior Night'," said Spears of playing in her final home game. "We came out extremely slow. But we picked it up eventually and pulled out the win."

"The greatest advice we (Lex, Ky and myself) were given as freshmen was to stay together all four years, something good really can happen," said Farrar. "We did just that and had our first winning regular season since we've been here and are on the verge of having our first winning season overall in a minute. I love those girls. Through it all, we still managed to stick together and experience 'Senior Night' together."
